Also on the ground floor is a large bedroom with 2 single beds, a wardrobe and a new walk-in shower room with washbasin and heated towel rail. There is a second toilet downstairs next to the front door. Upstairs is a bathroom with a shower, toilet and wash-basin. There is a large double bed and a table, chairs and a large wardrobe. In winter the wood burner and electric heaters keep you warm and snug. In the height of summer, the house remains cool and comfortable thanks to the shutters and thick stone walls. The house no longer functions as a signal house. La Barrière (rail crossing) next door is automatic. There is a small local train passing by a few times a day that stops in the village, but you get used to this very quickly. There are trains from the village to Limoges, Angouleme and one stop to the local town of St Junien. You can pay on the train if boarding at St Brice. From a station with a ticket office, you must buy your ticket at the station. There is a bakery, chemist and restaurant bar-tabac a few minutes walk from the house. The house is just outside the Northern boarder of the stunning Périgord Limousin Natural Regional Park which stretches from the River Vienne, down to the Dordogne in the south of the park. There are stunning walks, cycle rides and drives in the surrounding area and kayaking available nearby. If you have a car, you will find yourself on one of the hundreds of country roads that wind through the area. Old stone bridges bring you over numerous little streams that cross your path. The local roads are well engineered and there is very little traffic. Woodland and small meadows are home to rich wildlife and beautiful Limousin cows. The sleepy villages that you will encounter on your way are not yet deluged with tourists, so expect to speak French in what is truly authentic French countryside. What a stylish cosy house. The downstairs bedroom has a luxurious ensuite with a drench shower. Woodturner, really well equipped, lovely retreat in chilly misty November. There's a characterful village up the road with a boulangerie and restaurant plus apple press for fresh juice. Nearby...More

Thanks for your lovely review, Cathy. A woodturner would be a great addition, but our wood goes in the wood burner for now, haha. You are welcome back again anytime.

This is our second stay and we enjoyed coming back to Signalhouse. Iris and Bruno made great improvements, especially the walk in shower and the beautiful secluded garden. The house was lovely and cool during the 40 degree heat and the river nearby is lovely....More

About the neighbourhood
St Brice sur Vienne is situated in the heart of France; the Haute Vienne in the region Limousin, (now part of ‘Nouvelle Aquitaine’). A beautiful, lush green area which is named after the river Vienne that meanders through the hilly countryside. The area is well known for its apples and cider and there is an ancient village apple press in St Brice. The town of St-Junien is just 4 kilometres away. It has alarge supermarkets and a Tourist Information. Every Saturday there is a market with delicious local produce and the indoor market is open during the week too. There is a cinema and excellent swimming pool, with indoor and 2 outdoor pools, a flume, play areas, and a sauna/hammam included in the entry price.
Getting around
A car is the fastest way of getting around. There are two bikes available for guests (a mountain bike and a Dutch city bike) and France is an excellent place for cycling. You can also rent bicycles that are delivered and collected. We do have a train station in the village, but you need to check the timetable as trains only stop a few times a day.
