About the neighbourhood
In addition to the working of crofts many of the local residents are self- employed Harris Tweed weavers. There are two local Harris Tweed mills, one in Shawbost and one in Carloway. It may be possible by prior arrangement to visit the mills. There are a number of sandy beaches in the area and one in particular noted for surfing. The landscape is a mixture of croft land, moorland, lochs and burns. There are opportunities for fishing, both trout, salmon and sea fishing with a number of good lochs within easy reach. Permit would be required for salmon fishing. The area is good for bird watching with land birds, sea birds and a number of raptors including the golden eagle. Places of interest include the Norse Mill, Garenin Black Houses, Doune Broch, Callanish Standing Stones, Whalebone A...
Getting around
Transport is highly recommended for sight seeing, visiting beaches etc. There is a bus service but up to date timetable should be checked at bus station in Stornoway close to ferry terminal.
