Askrigg, Yorkshire Dales National Park, North Yorkshire, England
Welcome to Kirklea, our traditional nineteenth-century cottage and the ideal holiday home for enjoying the beautiful Yorkshire Dales.

It's fully equipped for a family and comfortably sleeps 6 in three good-size bedrooms (1 king-size, 4 single beds) - the view from the main bedroom down the Dale is particularly stunning. The kitchen was recently installed and includes all modern gadgets. It adjoins the dining area where there's a new wood-burning stove to keep you snug on chilly evenings. The lounge used to be the village post office - you can still see the traditional wooden beams, the old safe and the recess for the post box! There are two washrooms with wc and handbasin; upstairs there's a bath with shower, downstairs a wet-room with shower.

There's wi-fi and 2 TVs (1 with satellite Freeview); and a selection of boo...

Reviewed 24 December 2017 for a stay in September 2017

Have stayed three times at this cottage, it’s ideally located with three generous size bedrooms two of the bedrooms have single beds ideally one of these should be changed to a double.
The only down sides to the property is that the bedrooms can be cold, we found the single beds uncomfortable (I can sleep anywhere) and there’s not enough comfortable setting in the front room which would also benefit from a coal fire.
It is dog friendly and has good size back garden.
The best pub in the village is situated directly opposite the front door.

Management response:

Thank you for your comments, that's very helpful. We have changed 2 of the single bed mattresses but are not sure whether an extra double bed would be better for all guests. We will look into options for upgrading the lounge, there is a new wood fire in the dining room. The bedrooms have storage heaters which guests can adjust...

Reviewed 20 May 2016 for a stay in May 2016

Stayed here for a week in May 2016 with my parents and our dogs. This is a well maintained and centrally located holiday cottage which is perfectly situated for exploring the area. The enclosed garden was perfect for our dogs (no chance of escape!), and we really loved the large open plan kitchen/diner/family room. There is no dedicated parking for this cottage, however this seems quite normal for this village and there is on street parking the full length of the Main Street, as well as a public car park just round the corner. The crown inn pub is just across the road and is well worth a visit for an evening meal. The village is also well served with another 2 pubs, a bakery/deli, tearoom and village shop; all of which are a very short walk from the cottage. We really loved staying at this cottage, and will book again next time we are holiday inn in the area.

About the neighbourhood
Kirklea is in the beautiful little village of Askrigg in the heart of the Dales (featured in the TV series ‘All Creatures Great & Small’), which has a selection of shops, cafes and great pubs serving local beers and good food.

For walkers, there are easy footpaths directly from the cottage down to the River Yore and on to the falls at Aysgarth and Castle Bolton; or, for the more hardy, walk up to the footpaths to Mill Gill Falls and the high moorland of Askrigg Allotment. Slightly further afield are the many tourist attractions of Wensleydale such as Jervaulx Abbey, Hardraw Force and The Forbidden Corner.
Getting around
Most people will find a car the best way to explore. However, a useful option is the local buses, which run regularly to the market towns of Leyburn and Hawes, with its famous cheese centre. They're also very handy for reaching slightly more distant walks.
There's no local train service but there is a restored railway from Redmire to Leyburn and beyond; and of course, you're not far from the famous scenic line between Settle & Carlisle.

How to get there
The cottage is in the centre of the village, towards the top of the hill - you'll easily recognise it from the photo!
By far the easiest way to reach it is by car (it's about 45mins from the A1M or 55 mins from the M6). The local roads are generally well maintained but please be careful especially on some of the narrower mountain tracks.
Parking is in nearby (free) public car parks in the village, we're posted details on the notice board in the cottage.
