Welcome to Casa de Pirata, a romantic, secluded beach shack set in the paradise private eco-preserve of Los Chonchos, a twenty minute boat ride from Yelapa. The site comprises twenty three casas and a restaurant set in twenty five acres of virgin jungle and three beautiful beaches. Our palapa is the closest shack to the beach, with its own private pathway winding through palms and banana trees to the sand, yet enjoys incredible peace and privacy. Los Chonchos is only accessible by boat, or on foot, so totally peaceful. It's the perfect place to unwind and reconnect with nature - there's a rich variety of wildlife to see including humpback whales, dolphins, mantas, turtles, iguanas, drangonflies, bats, pelicans, frigate birds, macaws and butterflies. The snorkelling's great - we provide two sets of masks and snorkels for you - the main beach is sandy and lovely for swimming, and 10 minutes walk away is a second far longer beach where yours will often be the only footsteps in the sand! Please be aware that we're a remote, off-grid destination, with no wifi and limited mobile reception - which is why we love it ! We also have our share of bugs and critters that come with this jungle environment, along with small bats that flit in and around our palapa, which we love having there, but some guests have found distressing! So it's not for everybody, and if any of this is a concern for you, we'd recommend booking accommodation in more developed resorts in the area like Yelapa, and opt for air-con if bugs are a particular issue. Our palapa is super simple but comfortable, furnished with rustic furniture all made by local craftspeople. There's a sea kayak at your disposal, good trekking in the jungle all around, and you sleep to the sound of waves breaking on the rocks, fireflies flashing around you. Water is from a spring high up in the hills above, and power just solar or propane - pollution and noise are kept to a minimum as this is a big turtle nesting site. The kitchen is basic but well equipped for self-catering should you choose, with a gas stove and two-burner hob, and the inside/outside bathroom has a hot shower. There's also an outside dining area. We provide a drinking fountain should you prefer to drink bottled water. Fridge freezer and lighting are solar powered, with an inverter for 240v ac to recharge phones and laptops etc There are decks on two sides of the shack, with fantastic views across the beach and out over the open ocean - great for whale watching! The night skies are just breathtaking - there's hardly any light pollution here. Bring solid walking shoes for jungle trekking (it's rough in places). The support crew here are just lovely - Gabriel, our main minder, is born and bred on Los Chonchos, and a total turtle nut as well a mine of information about this environment and all the creatures we share it with, though helps if you speak some spanish...Ruben drops in and out to look after building and maintenance, and is just great to hang out with. There's a small restaurant on site, but no store, so wise to bring some supplies with you for self-catering. Arturo runs most of the provisions, and you can order for the next day... and he has an excellent fish and seafood restaurant in Chimo, a totally uninvaded and charming Mexican fishing village an hour's trek along the coast. He'll also give you a cheap boat ride home if stranded there with too much shopping to haul back.. ! There are some amazing dive sites in the bay, but you would need to make your own arrangements for that. The boat taxi leaves from Boca de Tomatlan at 9am and 3pm daily, allow an hour's taxi ride from the airport at Puerto de Vallarta. If flights don't meet it, you may need to spend a night in the town, where we'd recommend the hotel Posada de Roger - good value, nice people... and a wide choice of restaurants on the seafront nearby - we recommend the 'blue shrimp'. Or if you give us reasonable notice, we can arrange for Arturo to meet you with his boat at Boca de Tomatlan. And if you need to get back to 'civilisation' - the water taxi works for a day trip back to Yelapa, where there are a good selection of restaurants, some grocery stores, and a wide range of activities from yoga to pony trekking up to the lovely waterfall there. Rainy season is June-October, (fantastic lightning storms..) which are also the hottest months - August average is 30c, January coolest at 25c. Humpback whale migration season is from mid October to March. Puerto Vallarta airport is well served by US airline operators, aeromexico, air canada etc. From the UK the only direct flight, and cheapest option, is Thomson - they fly weekly or cheaper fortnightly returns from Manchester (fridays) or Gatwick on saturdays. We'll send you a full information sheet on request to help make your stay as wonderful as possible!More

Los Chonchos is a tropical paradise--a place that reminded me of childhood dreams of running away from home, stowing aboard a schooner, being shipwrecked and washing up on a secluded and pristine sandy beach with the jungle and fluted mountains rising behind it. You can...More
