About the neighbourhood
Hinning House lies in a 12 acre estate of pasture and woodland within the Lake District National Park. A footpath adjacent to the House provides walking access to the Fell and nearby Devoke Water which provides good fishing.

The village of Boot a few miles up the valley lies at the foot of Scafell and provides many additional walking options as well as the famous Ravenglass and Eskdale narrow gauge railway. This narrow gauge railway, opened in 1875 to carry iron ore to the Furness Railway and is now carrying passengers from the old Roman port of Ravenglass seven miles along the Eskdale valley to Eskdale with both steam or diesel engines.

Nearby Muncaster Castle with it's gardens, café, owl and heron sancturies provides a dramatic view of Eskdale. There are several very good pu...

How to get there
Railway: Ravenglass: 5.3 km
Leave the M6 at J36 and take the A590 signed to Barrow and Newby Bridge, continue on the A590 to Greenodd and turn right onto A5092. This becomes the A595 at Grizebeck, continue past Broughton in Furness and just after the traffic lights at Duddon Bridge turn right and go up over Corney Fell continuing on this narrow lane to rejoin the A595 at Broad Oak. (This is not advisable in bad weather so just stay on the A595 and continue as follows). As you descend down into the Esk valley towards the river, you will go round many Z bends and as you approach the river you see the 'Road Narrows' signs and an unclassified lane on the right which leads to Birkby and Eskdale (the sign has gone), turn right here and drive about 1.5 miles to reach Hinning House beside the lane on the right.
