About the neighbourhood
The cottage is on the edge of the Spey Bay nature reserve, famous for birds and wildlife such as otters. The WDCS base at Tugnet is 30 minutes walk away,, and 15 minutes cycle. Ospreys frequent the area in season, and dolphins and seals are often seen close to shore. The Speyside Way is located 15 minutes walk away. Mountain bike trails are to be found at Fochabers' Windy Walks, and several running and walking trails criss-cross the local area. Garmouth and Kingston are historic villages, Kingston a model village, developed for wooden shipbuilding from as early as 1785 to as recently as 1920, taking advantage of the timber industry which developed along the Spey. Garmouth is probably most famous for the 'Maggie Fair' a fair which has origins in 1587, when Garmouth was erected a Burgh of B...
Getting around
A car is necessary to make the most of your visit, although there is a local bus service during the week, but not at weekends. Local taxi firms are accustomed to longer journeys, and as we are in the midst of 'Whisky Country' it is nice to let someone else drive if you want to taste the different local drinks. Garmouth and Kingston have a large number of cycle and walking paths on the doorstep, and it is really useful to pack a pair of stout walking shoes, and bicycles. The River Spey is also becoming a destination for kayakers, and there is secure storage for bikes and kayaks at the cottage.
