The Spot o' Gold Cottage is a fully appointed home and a non-smoking environment .There is no television and access, however, if you are lucky enough to have a rainy day, there is a 46' screen with a selection of over 400 DVD movies to choose from! (Happy movie marathon-ing!). It is an easy 5 minute walk to the town beach area with a sandy bottom, bath house and life guard Memorial Day through Labor Day weekend. New this year, a small general store will be open for the summer season! The beach allows full-access to the water and includes a boat launch. Please pack water shoes! There is also an opportunity to rent boats. (Please ask for details if you are interested.) Canandaigua Lake is approximately 1 mile wide at Vine Valley and is 17 miles long. At the southern end (approximately 4 miles away) there is the West River, perfect for a lazy kayak or canoe ride where eagles nest! C. C. and Pippa, the resident outdoor cats, are the cottage ambassadors and will be happy to keep you company while you relax on the front porch! The Spot O' Gold is on a private, quiet lane with parking space for two cars. The quiet neighborhood is made up of a combination of retirees and small families that come on the weekends and guests are asked to respect the 'culture' of the neighborhood. The street can be quite active on the weekends with golf carts and walkers, however, the week days are very quiet and lovely in their own way. The town ordinance specifies quiet time from 10 pm to 10 am! Lovely for star gazers and relaxing on the porch to the night sounds of crickets, tree frogs, owls and more! The front yard features extensive Hosta gardens with a covered, wrap around porch.New this year is a privacy fence creating a courtyard and additional privacy for the front porch. The cozy back yard has a fire pit and open back deck along the side of a creek that is usually dry in the summer, which offers another type of adventure, fossil hunting! This is your opportunity to experience exceptional gardens and rare landscapes in hushed surroundings that are captivating, inspiring and serene. There are humming bird feeders, general bird feeders and other natural wildlife habitats for additional animals to call home and to capture your imagination. The cottage has its own unique interiors with vintage furnishings, furniture remnants, mid-century decor, unique collections, architectural 'remnants', and artwork to enjoy. The primary sleeping area (upstairs) offers a queen bed and half-bath. The second sleeping area is also upstairs and is off a common area at the top of the steps and is an open loft with half-wall looking into the living room below. Also upstairs is the entrance to a second story Juliette balcony. The third sleeping area is downstairs, across the hall from the full bath and contains two twin beds. The cottage septic system is small and we are unable to accommodate more than four (4) over night guests at one time. Living a simpler life within the unique wine region of the finger lakes offers so much more than a single “escape destination”. To name a few points of interest close to the cottage: water falls are 30min. away, hiking trails are 15 min. away and a community of artists is 20 min. away. Internationally known points of interest, Niagara Falls, Watkins Glen, Letchworth State Park (the Grand Canyon of the east), Ithaca a city of gorges, Curtis airplane museum, Elmira (soaring capital of the world), Baseball’s “hall of fame”, the Strong Museum of Play, and the Corning glass center are all within a 2 hour drive. Along with all these choices you can add 2 “state of the art” casinos each approx. 45 min. away and a “zip line” at a near by ski resort! Check-in is at 4:00 p.m. Check out by 9:00 a.m. Please note that the gardens and yard must be maintained and there will be someone working on them as needed through the season. We will be as unobtrusive as possible. Please make mention if you would like total privacy at any specific time to let us know and we will accommodate you and work around your schedule. This is a true sanctuary for those looking to 'un-plug' for a quiet vacation! We'd love to have you come and stay among the birds, trees and gardens, and ask that you provide the names and ages of the guests in your party when you book your reservation. The cottage is 'kid-friendly' but not 'childproof'. New this year are the additions of natural/organic pathways more “bird bath fairy gardens”, a sun garden of annuals, and a front yard “pumpkin patch”! We’d love to meet you and share all the wonders of the area. Check our pictures as there will be many additions from now through spring. Keeper of the Spot O' Gold, Evie DouglasMore

Interaction with guests
I greet each guest upon arrival and after a very short tour, answer questions, and give you the key! I am available throughout your stay for any problems that may arise. The cottage is just 20 minuets from the towns of Canandaigua, Penn Yan, Naples and Geneva, each with their own special attractions. There are plenty of wine trails, cheese trails, craft breweries, and cideries, antique shops, eateries, parks, high-end shopping, hiking/biking trails, waterfalls and spectacular views - all nearby. We are about an hour from downtown Rochester and under 2 hours from each Niagara Falls, Ithaca, and Corning (Corning Museum of Glass). The cottage is approximately a 7 hour drive from New York City.

About the neighbourhood
Enjoy the quiet, private outdoor living space set back from the road and snuggled up beside the creek in back! The 'Enchanted Forest' surrounding the cottage adds a touch of whimsy, imagination and magic to your vacation getaway! Like a mini treasure hunt, you will find hidden objects in each of the gardens but there are bold statements as well! A short walk around the block and you can witness the Milky Way on a clear summer's night. There is a near by seasonal campground that invites you to take a quiet walk into the woods. Within 20 miles you are on extensive 'wine tours' on neighboring finger lakes! The city of Canandaigua provides all kinds of shopping opportunities and the town of Victor has a very prestigious shopping mall.
