Somerset West is a popular tourist destination surrounded by magnificent mountains and vineyards, with the Indian ocean and golden sandy beaches nearby. The town was named Somerset in the 1800s after an English governor of the Cape Colony, Lord Charles Henry Somerset. There are many historical sites to explore such as the Vergelegen Wine Estate (an 8-minute drive away).
