Dampest room ever + ABSENTEE OWNER.
When we eventually found the place and arrived as booked..we found a VERY steep angled downwards drive, which went even steeper into a 45° drop down to the upper rooms of the lodge plus the car park. When we arrived, we were informed by a young lady that for the following days, we would be alone on the property as the owner was away in New Zealand on her own holiday..and the house sitter was going to a family wedding...but if we really needed assistance..there was the owners mother in law in her small house alongside who would help and advise us if needed....(70 yrs old). Upon entering our room on the ground floor, the smell of damp was VERY prevalent, to which the house sitter replied was because of all the rain they'd had recently..making everything appear damp. Soooooo...that would have NOTHING to do with the bedding feeling very damp and smelling musty...even though I used 1can of air freshener whilst here..as well as the inside of the kitchen cupboards smelling stale..and having an old / live worm factory outside of the bedroom window then...or ants coming through kitchen floor tile grout... Having the shower at the foot of the bed didn't do much to alleviate the damp issue either...but...to ensure I was fair in my assessment of this B&B/self catering venue.. I went into Durban and bought a damp meter test unit (double pronged type) at R328 including tax...where the BED actually registered as being damp as well as the walls. As for breakfast..well.....we were surprised to find that we would be provided with 2 cartons of long life milk..5packs of muesli.. approx 8 wheatabix type cereal bars things..a box of 6 muffins..as the owner had said that we would not have any breakfasts provided for the 1st day..but she would ensure there would be breakfasts and milk available...but she did NOT say..this would be HER expectations of substitute breakfasts...as it certainly is NOT my idea of replacement meals. We ate out every single day..as we didn't want to use her supplies as they would obviously be used for her own breakfasts upon her return....NOT. The fruit in juice carton we were left was NOT used either..as the fruit appeared to have "misty looking" juice in the carton.. But we DID use the yoghurt upon awaking as a pre-breakfast livener... I used 3bath towels to dry condensation from the walls in the 1st 2days in there... As well as numerous paper rolls we bought to wipe the wet walls down with constantly... The TV in this room is so small that the remote for it is the same height as the remote it services..I actually have a computer monitor that's larger than this (approx 15" long x 10" deep)which is approx iPad Pro size...oh dear... This room has the dirtiest carpet I have ever seen laid in a BnB...and this is most certainly a fire hazard room as the door is below wooden flooring and staircase that services the upper room..but as the window has fixed wooden frames inside the window (as burglar bars) it would be impossible to get out of there alive...let alone asking the mother in law to help.. There was 1bedside table with 1 lamp thereon..with another small folding table alongside this with crap Ricofey and sugars thereon..with nothing alongside the opposite side of the bed, as there was No power socket on that wall anywhere..and NO room to put even a small beside cabinet there.... As we found the description and the actual location to be totally different, if the owner would have been on site during our stay..then I would have DEMANDED a FULL refund of our money, as she had requested we paid the full amount as she had been let down with bookings before..and as we had booked for 12days here she wanted to ensure the booking...if I would have known the hovel we were expected to stay in was as bad as we found, I would have used the services of one of the other 4 B&Bs we went to view.. but unfortunately, booking.com stated we would have to speak with the owners in the 1st instance before they could issue a refund option to us...which we FULLY intend actioning upon our return to the UK as the owner will still be away then, and not able to speak directly with. Having looked at other poor reports of this place...it appears that we have all been placed in the same room...if so..why havn't the owners rectified all these repeating issues...to stop these bad reports. NO hot water in main sink..only cold..yet shower unit and small vanity sink in the restroom area has hot water...10ft copper pipe...3 x 90 elbows, 1tap and a T piece would sort that problem... The pool area and laapa looked brilliant from top stairway...but upon level view.. every plastic chair..every cushion..the table and the floor was covered with bird droppings and even the children from one of the upper rooms put bath towels over these before they would sit in them at the pool side..the braai area was very dirty with bbq sauce everywhere and dead ashes left on the cooking area as well. .. All in all...as a senior advisor on this website AND Rooms SA...I can now state quite clearly that this room is THE worst place I have ever had 2stay in, in over 25years of coming to South Africa..and.. We SHALL be reclaiming all our money we were charged here...as well as notifying SATB that they need to re.Assess their star rating for this place..as it is obvious that THIS room will continue to bring their rating down until all the faults are rectified. What did I like about this hovel... Meeting the lovely lady Ingrid (mother in law), as she was a wonderful lady to speak with..knowledgeable about where WE came from..and such a wonderful lady all round..she even invited me to tea with her..which was a lovely evenings entertainment for us all... So...not EVERYTHING was bad here... But the remaining 99° of our experience WAS... As I ALWAYS do..I videos the room upon entering...and as in place upon leaving. This is so any personal bad remarks about condition we left the room in, can be disputed in court of law...we have only had to do this once..which we won..and the guest house had to repay all our costs and tickets for our air fares back to the UK... Stills were taken as found...fly / other swatted on the wall over 2 ring cooker.. Ants leaving their nest under the kitchen area floor...dead mozzies on window cill.. Dirty marks on linen pillowcases and top sheets...including CLEAN sheets... the state of the very dirty bedroom carpet... The website would only allow these photos as display..but we have many more if anyone should request them....at... c-c-c-s@hotmail.co.uk or through the TripAdvisor website...Nyetsi. These owners are just playing at this business and are using the lack of accommodation in the area to fleece travellers...STOP using this room...your reports will immediately improve..or get the issues resolved...

Fantastic home away from home
It delivered as promised except the photos on the website do not do it justice. Very comfortable - felt like we were at home, very friendly owners and staff who could not do enough for us. Highly recommended.

Quiet and relaxing..A home away from home
Stayed at Aloe Ridge for 11 days...my husband and three children. Prior to going to Gillitts I was communicating with the owner Tricia who was very helpful. She arranged car hire for us in advance and the car was available for us when we arrived. The four bedroomed apartment was very clean. The kitchen had all utensils and essential electrical gadgets. The lady who services the house is indeed 'a people person' .. very helpful. The shops and shopping mall just a few minutes drive away. Of course one would definitely need a car to be able to explore other areas in Durban and around. We enjoyed iur stay! Thanks Tricia and team!! Jessica Harare; Zimbabwe
