Quarterdeck was originally built around 1740 as a “one-up one-down” fisherman's cottage and it appears on old plans from around this time. It was then extended sometime in the 1800s to create the 3 bedroom cottage you see today. The cottage was originally owned by the Duke of Northumberland, but passed in to private hands in the 1920s, although this short row of houses is still informally referred to as the “Percy Cottages”, Percy being the family name of the Duke. Alnmouth is an old trading port and fishing village that has been a tourist destination since the railways arrived in Victorian times. The owners of the cottage live only 3 miles away and are close at hand should you need them during your stay. Arrival instructions are sent out 1 to 2 weeks prior to your arrival and include information on accessing the cottage, parking, contacting the owners, etc. There is a key safe at the property so that arrival times can be flexible, but the owners are also happy to meet guests and show them around the cottage if preferred.

On first impression it looked fantastic, well situated in the lovely village, big rooms fully equipped. The main down points are the extremely poor shower, my elderly mother did not feel safe, a hand rail would of helped, the kitchen needs a referb. The cooker...More

All the sleeping accommodation is upstairs on the first floor and consists of 1 king size bed in the main bedroom and 3 full-size single beds in the twin and single bedrooms. A travel cot and high chair are available on request, although no stair gates are fitted and limited bedding is supplied for the travel cot. The bathroom contains a large walk-in shower, but please note that there is no bath. Downstairs there is a large living room and a separate large dining room with the kitchen off to the side. The living room has ample comfortable seating for 6, a large HD TV with freeview and DVD player. The dining room has a large (extendable) dining table that easily accommodates the 6 chairs provided and a digital radio with bluetooth connection for other devices. A range of DVDs, books and games are provided for use of our guests. The kitchen is well equipped to allow realistic self-catering for 6 people.

Alnmouth has a number of good pubs and restaurants as well as a handful of small shops (including a deli and a post office). The market town of Alnwick is only about 3 miles away and has a wider range of shops (including supermarkets) and other conveniences.There are many castles and country houses within a short drive from Alnmouth. These include Alnwick Castle (home to the Duke of Northumberland), Warkworth Castle (English Heritage), Cragside (National Trust), and the much photographed ruin of Dunstanburgh Castle. How to get there
The cottage is situated in the heart of the coastal village of Alnmouth, which can be found at the end of the B1338 road and is less than 1 mile from the A1068 or 3 miles from the A1. There is a mainline train station called 'Alnmouth' or 'Alnmouth for Alnwick' which is less than 1 mile from the property and is served by East Coast and Cross Country trains travelling between Newcastle and Edinburgh.
