This is a lovely romantic getaway set in a tranquil garden in a lovely village called Stanford, approximately 150 km from Cape Town. It is the ideal place from which to explore the southern-most tip of Africa (which is NOT in Cape Town!) and enjoy South Africa's unique flora & flora.

From Stanford you can go whale-watching; shark-cage diving; enjoy various wine routes; kayak on the sea or canoe down the river; go bird-watching on sea, land or river;... or just relax and enjoy Stanford's tranquillity, quaint restaurants and take a gentle stroll along the river.Stanford and environs caters for every mood, whim or feeling. Use the village (and our cottage) as your base and you will experience only best South African hospitality.

In addition Stanford has its own wonderful antique/ junk/ curiosity shops, highly recommended re...

B's cottage is a homey, cozy one-bedroom retreat in a lovely garden in the charming village of Stanford, just east of the much busier Hermanus on South Africa's south coast. It was a welcoming place to come 'home' to after the writing workshop I attended one weekend, and an easy stroll from both the workshop and various shops and restaurants along the 'main drag', Queen Victoria Street (so quiet you can stand in the middle of the road for a few minutes until a car comes!). Bea was really helpful answering questions before my arrival about sights to see en route -- wine and cheese farms mainly -- but was scarce, though available, over the weekend -- as one would want. Stanford itself is a charming place -- friendly people, yummy food in town and environs, and the lovely Klein River about 10 mins away from the cottage; I really enjoyed walking along it. The wi-fi works brilliantly; there's a tv if you must; an indoor fireplace; and a braai. There's no oven -- stovetop and microwave only...

B"s cottage is in the heart of Stanford, a short stroll to all of the local restaurants. The cottage is set within beautiful gardens with several outside seating areas with a braai. The cottage itself is perfect for a couple, with open fireplace which would be great in the chillier months. Good shower & comfy bed & there's a decent tv & wifi too.

Bea was waiting for us at the cottage on our arrival & efficiently dealt with the handover of keys & ensured we knew of the local restaurants etc. Bea had also previously been very understanding on my error in making this booking & amended the dates with no fuss which we were very appreciative of.

We'll certainly be back, thanks Bea

About the neighbourhood
Stanford is a declared heritage village approximately 25km from Hermanus. Talk a guided tour to get to know how history and architecture embraced one another over the years; or get a Historical Stanford on Foot pamphlet and wander at leisure through the village. The village is bordered on the northern side by the scenic Klein River, and a walking trail meanders all along the river and through the green belts in the village.

If you love bird-watching, there are about 120 bird species in Stanford. Best place to view them is on or along the river, or from the bird hide on the dam in the village

River trips: The early morning and sunset river trips are magical. Spot some rare birds such as the Fish Eagle or Purple Gallinule, or just sit back and relax with a mug of coffee or glass of ou...

How to get there
Airport: Cape Town: 150.0 km
Whether you arrive at Cape Town International Airport or reside in Cape Town, this is the most beautiful city in the world. Table Mountain towering above the city either shrouded in cloud or starkly clear, boldly proclaims “this is Cape Town”. Your journey to B’s Cottage starts here.

Do not take the N2 up Sir Lowry’s pass. Rather find your way to Gordon’s Bay Village (R44) and take the coastal route. It may be slightly further to Stanford but it is definitely worth the trip.

The bay you see on your right as you pass through Gordon’s Bay Village is False Bay (so named because some 300 years ago sailors on their way back from India, thought it was Table Bay as Cape Point and Cape Hangklip, you are going towards it, look similar). The road winds along the coast; sometimes almost through th...
