This is a house built between 1830 and 1870 by the first farmers who came to the Karoo. The house is built of stone, even the roof, because there were no other building material, for the Karoo is a very dry region in South Africa. Everyone enjoys the little history of the Karoo and wonder what it was like to live here when they look up in the stone corbelled roof above. Incredible stars at night make it a unique experience wich you will not see at many other places, because it is situated on a farm away from other lights and polution.

A great Karoo Highlands stay! What a treat!
We spent 2 nights in the Stone cottage - delightful, airy, clean, comfortable and good attention to detail. We then spent a further 2 nights in the Corbelled guest house - what a treat! We felt like we went back in time - except it had all the comforts of modern day - but most tastefully presented. Bonus - pet friendly and our Princess had such fun on the farm! Our hosts were amazing - kind, helpful and just gracious. Thank you Natasha and Stegman. The stars were incredible - the night skies were amazing and we really had a great exciting Karoo experience. We loved our 4 nights. A highly recommended stay! Thank you.

Easter weekend
this was The high light of the weekend. we arrived her the afternoon. it was so quit and the space so vast. the stars was so bright and the moon was there as well. we walked around and had a look at the other venue that they have where you may stay. the corbelled house is just something to see and experience. this is so close to the " regte vader Jakob" as can be Every thing that you need is in the house. Hot water and power. I had read until late with no problem. Hot water and a toilet. much more than the people had when they build it. what was so nice when we got there it was so cool. the night when it was cold outside it was warm inside. It is so eco green as can be. the hole farm run on sun and wind power. every thing have the minimum effect on nature. thanks for the owner and his wife that respect the nature and the past so much. the world much more of them. thank you for the stay and that you share it with us. I am so thankful to experience it

Experience the soul of the Karoo
The farm Osfontein is situated 20 Km outside the town Carnarvon. There are three choices of accommodation. The Corebelled house, a tree house and the kliphuis (stone house). We stayed in the kliphuis, a renovated wool shed. We found out that it was the runner-up in a “remake” competition and deservedly so. The atmosphere of checking into this little stone house was awesome and so was the true Karoo sunset, unspoilt by any city or town structures, which made the 7km dirt road (not in a bad condition at all) worthwhile. We felt as if we were alone in the Karoo. As the rental goes without supper or breakfast, the owners sell some magnificent lamb chops, which we braaied. The remainder of the wood we got was used to light up the fireplace inside the house and with the fire’s glow in front of you and the orange glow of the setting sun behind you, this came close to perfect. The house is spacious and has a big lounge/dining/kitchen as well as a bathroom and bedroom. There are beds in the lounge which allows you to lie on a bed, whilst watching the fire in the fire place. Very friendly hosts. Highly recommended. If the Corebelled house is already taken and the kliphuis is available, do not hesitate to book in there!

Authentic Experience
Osfontein Corbelled Cottage provides a truly authentic experience, while not sacrificing too many of the 21st century's creature comforts. From the warm welcome of the owners and their wonderful border collies, until regretfully leaving two days later, we enjoyed the magnificence of the Great Karoo landscape and the awesome sunsets. Frequent visits from the collies and farmyard chickens enhanced the experience. We left Osfontein feeling totally rejuvenated.

Bucketlist ticked
It was a longtime goal to stay over at a corbelled house. These tipe of houses are only located in a certain part of the Karoo and more or less 200 years old. Was built with stones and no timber at all. We felt so peacefull and relaxed and the inside was cool on a hot summers day.

Excellent stop-over en-route to Cape Town
Wanting to make a nice stop-over on our way down south, we decided on Carnarvon in the Bo-Karoo. We were overwhelmed by the beauty of the surroundings, enhanced by the hospitality of Stegmann and Natasha. The farm has 3 units available: Tree House (suited for Honeymooners), Kliphuisie (a converted stone-built sheep-shed) and the 200+ year old Korbeel-huisie (stone cottage with domed stone roof). We chose the latter, as to experience a leap back into history, and it was a truly amazing experience! Although electricity is supplied for the fridge, kettle and cellphone/laptop/notebook chargers, lightning is only available in candle-power. The renowned Karoo-lambchops is available for purchase at competitive prices, as is firewood. Wintertime is also snowtime. Their rates are a notch higher than in-town accommodation, but it is worth every Rand. Well done, Stegman and Natasha!

Hospitality at it's best
We arrived and were heartily welcomed by Stegman and Natasha who own the farm and were invited in for coffee where they told us about the history of the corbelled houses and how they went about restoring theirs. They have wood available for sale and the most delicious karoo lamb chops to braai. The house was clean, beautifully restored and adequately furnished. It was quiet, peaceful and the stars in the Karoo are not to be missed. Unfortunately we only stayed one day and another day would have given us the opportunity to explore the farm and the tranquility of the Karoo. Very special experience and very special people.

Superb Karoostay
What a wonderfull experience. Was greeted very warmly by the hosts, Stegman and Nastasha. Even the dogs and a very pregnant cat were very friendly and kept us company!!! The house is just what you would expect - cosy and cute with old world charm but with all the necessary creature comforts. The sunset was beautiful and the karoo night sky unsurpassed. A great place to overnight for a bit of rest and relaxation!!!

Notes from owner
Me and my wife,Natasha are sheep farmers in the Karoo in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. We have been living for 33 years on the farm. We like to deal and meet our guests in person and make sure they enjoy their stay on the farm. The Corbelled house (the name comes from the building style in wich the roof is formed like) we renovated, because there are only a few of them still standing, many had fallen apart, and they were built only in a small area in the Karoo in South Africa. This is a dry area and there were no trees in those years,so they had to build these houses completely out of stone, even the roofs. Our guests love it to sleep in this piece of history and wonder what it would be like in the old days when they look up into the stone roof above the beds.It is equipped with everything for self catering.Candles are used for lighting to keep the old atmosphere in the house.
