This is a lovely designer house in Gion, of which the owners are obviously, and justifiably proud. The interior is very stylish and comfortable. The house is also well positioned in a quiet Geisha district. The only minor downside is that there are skylights in...More

A beautiful and traditional "Machiya", fully restored with exquisite taste. The house is very comfortable and looks even better in real life than in the pictures. Even as frequent travelers to Japan, we were really impressed by the quality of the renovation and the overall...More

About the neighbourhood
Away from the hustle and bustle of Gion, Miyagawa-chō is a place where entertainers still gather today.
Kabuki was first performed in many small theaters on the banks of the Kamo River. As Kabuki was just then developing into a mass entertainment spectacle as known today, the area became very popular and Miyagawa-chō quickly grew into a full town of teahouses. Today, Miyagawa-chō has its retain its kaburenjō or theater where geisha dances are performed, with its more authentic side and residents priding themselves in perpetuating the traditions, you will experience the real Kyoto.
