About the neighbourhood
FETHIYE AND ENVIRONS There is something for everyone in Fethiye and the surrounding area: beaches, scenery, historic sites. There are long hot summers and short mild winters. In summer, spend your days lolling in the gorgeous turquoise waters of the confluence of the Mediterranean and Aegean Seas - swim, snorkel, scuba dive. In spring and autumn try paragliding, trekking, climbing; investigate Butterfly Valley and the Sea Turtle nesting beaches. In winter, explore historic sites, go horseback riding, mountain biking, and wind down in the evenings sipping your favourite tipple while soaking up spectacular views of the coastal snow-capped mountains which lie to the north of the Bay of Fethiye. Frommers Review: Not much remains of ancient Telmessos, atop which modern-day Fethiye is built. In spite of centuries of destructive earthquakes, the cliff-side Lycian tombs and majestic sarcophagi never fail to draw a gasp. The antique theatre in the centre of town dates to Roman times, although its open disposition on the hill indicates Greek influences. The amphitheatre was picked apart for the reconstruction of the city after the devastating earthquake of 1957, and in 1994 restorations and further excavations to the site were begun. On the hillside east of town stands the ruined Crusader castle tower, constructed by the Knights of St. John out of the Hellenistic and Roman stonework of an earlier acropolis. Rock-cut tombs spot the cliff side, the most notable of which is the Tomb of King Amyntas in the form of a Greek temple dating to 350 B.C. The steps of the facade get a bit crowded around sunset, the favoured time for a visit because of the tomb's position on the hill. In the Mediterranean beach resort of Ölüdeniz you’ll find everything you could ever want: beautiful sun drenched beaches, deep turquoise blue sea and nothing but sun shine for all year around. Although Oludeniz is described as a lazy beach destination in some brochures there is plenty to do if you are not satisfied with long lazy days on the beach and frozen margaritas in your hand. You could jump from 2000 metres high and go paragliding, or go scuba diving in the warm crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean. Ölüdeniz area is among one of the best sailing routes in the whole Mediterranean. You could arrange your own group and go on a gulet cruise or alternatively join others and go on a cabin charter gulet cruise along the coast for a week or a day. So whether you are looking for a quite relaxing holiday or feeling adventurous and looking for something more than just beach & sun, Ölüdeniz has it all. Come and discover Ölüdeniz... Come and discover why 'Life’s a beach!' Butterfly Valley is a great day trip from Ölüdeniz. It is home to the unique Jersey Tiger butterfly. Between June and September, butterflies in thousands of colours and countless varieties can be seen here. This valley is an interesting canyon with steep cliffs up to 350 meters high and stretches back from the cove some 3-4 kilometres. To get to Butterfly Valley, you can take a boat from either Ölüdeniz or Fethiye. High in the mountains above Fethiye, rushing torrents of icy cold water cut a narrow gorge through the mountains over thousands of years, creating Saklikent Gorge. A natural wonder, the resulting canyon is 300 metres deep and 18 kilometres long and offers visitors one of the most breathtaking excursions in all of Turkey Saklikent Gorge has walls reaching a height of 300 metres and is navigable for the first 18 kilometres. Saklikent in Turkish means 'Hidden City'… The walls are so high that they cut out most of the sunlight and the fresh spring waters that flow through are freezing cold!. A cool refuge on hot summer days, Saklikent Gorge is a favourite picnic spot where rustic restaurants overhanging the river serve delicious fresh trout and other local delicacies. Car rental available from Dalaman Airport about 40Kms away. Fethiye town centre has all shops and ammenities required and is 5 mins by car to apartment.
