About the neighbourhood
Kalkan is set in one of Europe's most breath-taking, grand sweeping Mediterranean bays, with the truly majestic Taurus Mountains as a backdrop. An exquisite harbour, full of Turkish wooden gulets and small fishing craft, bordered with waterfront restaurants and the beach, is where the beautiful and historic old town area extends back from the sea. Formerly a Greek fishing village Kalkan is now a thriving but still unspoilt resort with the bustling historic Old Quarter being the heart of the town. After dusk, its winding streets full of traditional houses, restaurants, small boutiques and local shops with overhanging balconies teem with people as the tantalising aromas of Kalkan's renowned cuisine entice people down to the harbour and surrounding streets. An eclectic mix of Greek and old Kalkan architecture, with roof terrace restaurants, and lovely views to the sea, the old town is a place you will want to discover and enjoy. The Greek Orthodox Church by Kalkan`s harbour has been converted into a mosque and is the best example of Greek architecture in Kalkan, but at every turn whitewashed and stone buildings with shuttered windows timber and balconies reveal Kalkan's history. From Kalkan's harbour, many of the beach clubs dotted around the bay are accessed by small colourful boats that provide a complimentary service to transfer guests, and traditional wooden Gulets offer boat trips to the beaches, islands and inlets nearby. Water sports, diving and fishing trips are also offered.
How to get there
Flying to Turkey Turkish Visas and who to fly with Dalaman Airport Dalaman is the closest airport to Kalkan at approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes' drive. You can also fly into Antalya Airport, but the journey to Kalkan is longer at around 2 hours and 30 minutes. Dalaman airport, otherwise known as 'Mugla Airport', is located 5km south of Dalaman on the south west coast of Turkey. Dalaman has 2 terminals; the modern international terminal which was opened in 2006 and a domestic terminal. If you had a connecting flight via Istanbul, you would fly into the domestic terminal at Dalaman. Non-stop flights from the UK will fly into the international terminal. Facilities at the airport include; 16 cafes/restaurants, Duty free, shops, a bank, 2 currency exchange facilities, a premium/business lounge, and Wi-Fi internet access. Amongst these many restaurants is Burger King, Pizza Hut and McDonalds. We recommend that on your return flight to the UK, you bring food with you as the prices at the cafes/restaurants are very high. There is a restriction on liquids contained in hand luggage, just as there is departing UK airports. Visas for UK citizens When you are visiting Turkey, you must obtain a visa at the airport. When you arrive at Dalaman Airport, the visa desks are easy to find, and you should make your way straight there after entering the airport. You will arrive at the passport control area first, but continue past this area for 30 metres or so, and the visa kiosks are on the left hand side. There is good signage telling you where to go, and members of the airport staff to help. All members of your party must obtain a visa. For British citizens coming from the UK, the visa is £10 each (including infants). You can pay with either a £10 note each, or £20 note between 2. Please note; they will NOT accept Scottish or Northern Irish notes; this applies to almost every airport in Turkey. The visa queue will move pretty quickly; unless you're really unlucky! After you have paid your visa, you need to join the queue for passport control which is right next to the visa booths, so you will again join a relatively fast moving queue to have someone stamp your visa with the date you entered. Visas are valid for 180 days, and you can visit Turkey for up to 90 days within this duration. So if you visit in May for 2 weeks, you can return in September for another holiday without having to pay for another visa, so long as you leave the country before your visa expires! When you get through passport control, you will go down the escalator to baggage reclaim; this is normally a fairly quick process. Trolleys are available but you do have to pay to use them, and the airports exit is just to the left, around 100 metres from baggage reclaim. From the airport exit, make you way down to the car park, where our car hire and transfer drivers will be awaiting your arrival with a ' Turquoise Collection' board bearing the name of the lead guest. Other Visa requirements Tourists visit Turkey from all over the world, and there are different visa requirements for different countries, so it is always advised that you check your visa requirements if you are not a UK citizen. Citizens of the following countries do not need to purchase a Visa to enter Turkey: Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Holland, Iceland, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, Sweden and Switzerland. You can find out more information from the following website; http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-fees-at-border-gates-for-2010.en.mfa http://www.mfa.gov.tr/visa-information-for-foreigners.en.mfa Useful links for booking flights; http://www.skyscanner.net/ http://www.airflights.co.uk/ http://flightchecker.moneysavingexpert.com/ Airlines flying into Dalaman from the UK EasyJet fly from; London Gatwick, London Stansted, Bristol, Edinburgh and Manchester Flythomascook fly from; London Luton, London Gatwick, London Stansted, Edinburgh, Belfast, Newcastle, Cardiff, Bristol, Doncaster, Birmingham, Glasgow, Humberside, Leeds Bradford, Manchester, Norwich, East Midlands and Exeter Monarch fly from; London Gatwick, London Luton, Manchester, Leeds Bradford and Birmingham Thomson fly from London to Antalya. Jet2 fly from; Blackpool, East Midlands, Glasgow, Leeds Bradford, Manchester and Newcastle First Choice fly to Antalya from; London Gatwick and Manchester Non-direct airlines include; Turkish Airlines, British Airways and Pegasus Airlines. Flights are typically via Istanbul, so if you fancy a short trip to Istanbul before journeying to Kalkan, you can book an internal flight from Istanbul to Dalaman with these airlines.
