Chantrigne, Mayenne, Pays de la Loire
Le Vieux Fournil is a one bedroomed converted bakehouse, still with the original oven opening into the living space, providing that extra piece of interest and history to this wonderfully quirky building. The kitchen and bathroom are housed in the original woodstore and pig sty. The bedroom is converted from the hayloft although now the high ceiling is grandly adorned with its own chandelier! The cottage is located in the region of the Pays de la Loire with its spectacular landscapes in the north and vast vineyards to the south. The house is 2 km’s from the historic town of Lassay-les-Châteaux which boasts one of the finest examples in France of a fortified medieval chateau. The town has many winding streets amongst which can be found examples of medieval living all situated just off the main Market Square where you will find shops, bars... Read more

About the neighbourhood
Situated in the Pays de La Loire, the department of Mayenne is sandwiched between Normandy in the north and the Chateaux of the Loire to the south. Day trips could take you to the Normandy coast to visit Mont Saint Michel (the second most visited place in France after the Eiffel Tour), the walled coastal fort of St Malo or the WW2 museums situated along the Normandy beaches. Alternatively take the road south to see the stunning house and gardens of the Chateau of Villandry and visit the vin yards of Vouvray.

For trips closer to home Falaise is the magnificent castle home of William The Conquerer or why not visit the town of Jublains where a Roman encampment was discovered in, around and underneath the current buildings. All the rem
Getting around
A car is essential for travelling around this area but the roads are so quiet and traffic free that it actually makes driving a real pleasure. If you stay off the main roads you can find some wonderful places to stop for lunch, beautiful villages and as the Mayenne department has the highest number of privately owned Chateaux some magnificent buildings tucked in the most unlikely places!

Travelling from Caen is a much shorter journey once arriving in France so you can make time to explore the Normandy beaches and WW2 museums or explore the UNESCO designated town of Bayeux and visit the world renown tapestry.
