Quirky romantic cottage in French medieval village

Detached village house built over the old city wall, opposite a medieval church
1 of 27Detached village house built over the old city wall, opposite a medieval church
Cottage -
3 Bedrooms , 2 Bathrooms , Sleeps 7
Saint Germain les Belles, Haute-Vienne, Nouvelle-Aquitaine
A quaint higgledy-piggledy little French house in a medieval village square directly opposite a fortified XIVth Century church. 5 minutes walk down the hill is a swimming lake with a sandy beach set in stunning countryside. A real French getaway.

Downstairs is open from the kitchen with its big old French table to the living room.
Up the crooked staircase you reach 2 surprisingly large bedrooms, 1 x double and 1 x twin.
The double has an extra sink, the twin has an extra shower (not a thing of beauty but functional).
There is also a modern bathroom with a tub (shower over it), a wc and a sink.

Whilst there are enough beds to sleep 8 to 9 people, I wouldn't recommend sleeping that number of adults here as there is only one toilet and although there is a second shower, the water system may not support 2 showers going at the same t...

I don't live in the village but I have a trusted friend and house keeper on hand who speaks French and English. She can show you the ropes, and deal with any queries you might have. When you book I will give you her contact details but you will only see her if you want to.

The Little House is gorgeous. Cute, quirky and comfortable it is kitted out with everything you could need for your stay. Very authentic feel to the village, not touristy. Trot to the bakery in the morning for fresh croissants before heading to the lake for...More

This is a charming little house in the middle of a typically French village. The accommodation is versatile & comfortable and we had a lovely holiday there (this was our second visit). If you want to get away from it all (but with great local...More

There were 5 of us staying - 2 couples and an individual and the house was well set up for us. We didn't make it to the lake but the house was lovely, as described, with great instructions and clear communication. It was well stocked...More

About the neighbourhood
Where to start?? There's lots of water. The Limousin is known as the 'Land of a Thousand Lakes' - maybe a small exaggeration but actually not far short of the mark. There are loads of them! From the small local swimming lake in the village to the massive Lac Vassiviere and Lac Pardoux with all its water sports.
There's lots of countryside with great walking. Check out Mont Gargan and the walking in the forests around Meuzac and La Croisille sur Briance.
There are also lots of lovely small towns in and around the area with varying degrees of historical importance/prettiness/gastronomic enjoyment/shopping potential. Saint Leonard le Noblat, Pompadour, Chateauneuf La Foret, Pierre Buffiere to name but a few.
Getting around
There is a train station in Saint Germain les Belles and trains running between Limoges and Brive La Gaillard stop there. However, there is no bus network and unless you have some kind of transport yourself (car, scooter, or if you've got very strong legs, a bike) you will miss out on all the pretty little towns, villages and recreational opportunities in the area.
Car advised
How to get there
Airport: Limoges: 50.0 km
Railway: Sainte Germain les Belles: 1.7 km
The nearest decent airport is Limoges, but there are also airports at Bordeaux, Bergerac, Brive La Gaillard and Poitiers.

You can also get a direct train from Paris to Limoges.

You can get a train from Limoges to Saint Germain les Belles but I would recommend hiring a car as the trains are not that frequent and they don't serve all the small towns and villages around and about.

My house is directly opposite the 14th Century fortified church in the centre of the village.
