Also 8 km from our home, you can visit the boat lift of Strépy-Thieu. The tallest funicular boatlift in the world, right here in Strépy-Thieu. The size of this structure is awe-inspiring. This colossus measures a soaring 102m in height, and at the top it’s the size of a football pitch! You can see it standing over the town of Havré like a giant black mushroom as you approach on the E19-E42 motorway from Mons. And when you get up close, it’s all you see: the funicular boatlift of Stépy-Thieu dominates the Canal du Centre and the entire valley. In the same area, come and discover the boatlifts on the Canal du Centre. These unique, UNESCO-protected engineering works are a living reminder of the Centre Region’s industrial heritage. 15 km from AU MAZY, the Neolithic flint mines in Spiennes clearly show, as it is the case with others monuments registered in the UNESCO List, the human beings’ inventiveness. The archaeological potential of the site is considered as a fund of knowledge for the coming generations and is worth protecting for these ones. Visit the city of MONS, European Capital of Culture 2015.
