About the neighbourhood
Local Activities 1 minute away from horseback riding rentals. 5 minutes away from Nantahala Lake. 10 minutes away from fly fishing in streams and Nantahala River. 10 minutes away from hiking the Bartram Trail. 12 minutes away from raft put-in at Wayah Road and Highway 19/74. 25 minutes away from Nantahala Outdoor Center and Nantahala Gorge. 25 minutes from hiking the Appalachian Trail. 28 minutes from wagon rides. 35 minutes to 'Tail of the Dragon' motorcycle adventure. 48 minutes from historic train rides. Hiking Around Nancy's Vacation Rental At my rental is a map and details of how to get to these trails. All are open all year and free. 5 Minutes from Rental: You can reach a trailhead of Bartram Trail on Wayah Road across from Nantahala Lake. It is 3.0 miles from the house. 7 Minutes from Rental: Nantahala National Forest Appletree Group Campground: Appletree Trail: A 2.2 mile very difficult trail that climbs 1,640 feet in elevation and connects with four other area trails. Bartram Trail: A 6.5 mile section of the 71.1 mile Bartram Trail passes near the campground. The trail runs near the expeditions of William Bartram, an American naturalist from the late 1700s. London Bald Trail: 9 miles one-way, this trail climbs a slope at a high elevation. This very difficult trail connects with the Appletree Trail and Bartram Trail. 10 Minutes from Rental: Appalachian Trail from Tellico Gap to Wesser Bald is a moderately difficult hike of 3 miles out and back. It is the easiest hike up to the Wesser Bald fire tower. The climb up is somewhat steep. 15 Minutes from Rental: Nantahala Bikeway and Trail is 8 miles long. It starts at Nantahala River Launch Site at the intersection of Wayah Road and Highway 19. It goes to Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC). The first 1.2 miles are good for casual walkers and bicycles. It follows Nantahala River. The harder part to NOC goes on a Forest Service road. 25 Minutes from Rental: Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC) is in Nantahala Gorge at 13077 Highway 19 West, Bryson City. The Appalachian Trail goes through NOC. 25 Minutes from Rental: Wayah Bald is in Nantahala National Forest between Topton and Franklin. The stone Wayah Bald Observation Tower is at the area's highest point (5,385 feet). The Appalachian Trail (white paint) and Bartram Trail (yellow paint) cross at Wayah Bald. 25 Minutes from Rental: Rufus Morgan (Rough Fork) Falls is a 60-foot waterfall. It is next to Wayah Bald above. The waterfall is at the end of a moderate half mile hike (round trip 1 mile) along the Rufus Morgan Trail. There is a smaller waterfall 1/10 of a mile before the Rufus Morgan Fall. 25 Minutes from Rental: Silar Bald #1 Hike, part of the Appalachian Trail (white blaze). The 1.6 mile (one way) hike starts at Wayah Crest and is moderately difficult. Silar Bald is at elevation 5216 feet. At the top is an almost 360 degree view of the mountains. 40 Minutes from Rental: Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, Robbinsville, NC. It is one of the most impressive remnants of old-growth forest. This 3,800-acre forest was set aside in 1936 as a memorial to the author of the poem “Trees.” A 2 mile trail leads to the Joyce Kilmer Memorial.
