This fully equipped, semi-detached, foreshore cottage has unforgettably close sea views. All the main windows look across Sinclair Bay towards Orkney and the Pentland Skerries lighthouse and as the tide comes in across the sheltered bay, you could be watching a living oil painting of ocean surf. Downstairs Sea Shore Cottage has an open plan living room and kitchen. Upstairs both bedrooms overlook the sea to the north with a view of the two mile long open access sandy beach at Reiss visible just beyond the restored castle owned by a millionaire. Just one field (sometimes with cows) between you. (See the Ackergill Tower website to see how the 1% live! At about £1,000 per night!) Stop Press: Wi-Fi situation. We have had Wi-F in both Sea Shore and Sea Otter Cottages for many years and until recently it has been working reasonably well. Unfortunately we are now sorry to report that this BT service for which we continue to pay, has been getting steadily worse, presumably because more and more people in Ackergill are trying to use the Internet at the same time. We are promised that fast fibre optic cables “soon” but no definite dates so far. Hopefully you will find enough enjoyment of the location for this not to be too big a problem, and for some even an advantage. If messages are essential good Wi-Fi access is available in Weatherspoons in the centre of town, or in the foyer of McKays or the Norseman hotels. If needed, an ink-jet printer/photocopier/scanner can be rented at low cost. We appreciate how difficult it is for renal patients to find a holiday destination: if you are on dialysis, please contact us as we are able to put you in touch with suitable facilities. Caithness might seem far north but is still south of all of Norway and is well worth the 100 miles, two hour scenic seaside journey up from Inverness. Being on the East coast, midges are virtually never a problem; yet, facing west, the view from the living room of the sun setting over the castle, with every wave of a high tide being tinged with pink has to be seen to be believed. lf you love the sea and tranquillity this is the place for you to sit and unwind or to go for car free and carefree shoreline walks. At high tide, with only the sea and the surf visible through the windows, you could even be at sea without the seasickness. Orcas are regularly visible, seabirds and seals abound. Guests even sometimes see our shy sea otters. If you have a dog who needs walking Ackergill Haven is ideal as it lies a the end of a mile long no through road down from the main A99 to the handful of houses and the small harbour. So there is no through traffic whatsoever. Walks along the coast in either direction are totally car free. For those who enjoy eating out there are in Wick several excellent local hotels and even a gourmet French Restaurant. Don't miss the Guinness book of records 'Shortest street in the world' at Mackays friendly hotel (Give my greeting to Murray). Wick regularly hosts a sea boat/harbour festival and sometimes has fly-ins for light aircraft. Further afield in Scrabster (20 miles) both the Upper Deck and the distinctively ethical Captain's Galley ('Which' Best Fish Restaurant in the UK: 2008) are highly recommended - The Castle of Mey and the ruined Castle Sinclair Girnigoe are well worth visits, while the hinterland is a major bird sanctuary. Thurso has a world class surfing beach. Sea Shore Cottage is virtually a total re-build of what used to be the Boathouse Annexe of next-door Sea Otter Cottage (also available to rent), and is now a completely self-contained dwelling. We welcome you to come and enjoy our newly re-built cottage. We guarantee that you are unlikely to be disappointed. Several guests plan to return as soon as they can. Their comments can be seen on the website. More

If you are looking for a beautiful location by the sea in the north of Scotland then this is the place! (I don't think you could get closer to the sea if you tried). This lovely cottage is right on the sea front and has...More

We couldn't have been made more welcome. The cottage was clean, fresh, well supplied and in one of the most beautiful locations I have seen. The views from the windows were stunning. We saw otters, seals and too many birds to list. Every time you...More

Working on some ideas for a place outside to make easier to enjoy the sunsets over the castle but without disturbing those in Sea Otter next door. For the present maybe some seats on the grass just outside the fence would do. Will see what...More

So glad you enjoyed our wonderful cottage. Sorry about the scaffolding but we weren't expecting such a persuasive last minute guest. Roof is now finished and scaffolding removed!!

We are 'retired' and live in Leighton Buzzard (Near Milton Keynes) but we have an excellent local lady who keeps the place clean and changes the sheets etc. She lives just around the corner in Tower Drive. Although we live so far away we regularly take the train from home to Wick (8.30 am -> 10 pm. Only At our age only £100 return in the off season. Or in Nov or Feb EasyJet flight from Luton to Inverness, from only £30 return! followed by the 4 hours relaxing on the Far North Railway (aged over 50, only £24 return)

How to get there
Sea Otter Cottage is situated in the small village of Ackergill Haven just 2 miles from Wick town centre. If driving you need to head north on the main A99 road towards John o'Groats. After leave Wick, drive past Tesco and the airfield, and about half a mile further on, just after a cafe and art shop on the left, you will see a signpost to Ackergill on your right. Follow the road straight on towards the sea. As you enter Ackergill there are some houses on the left - and after most of them, just opposite a pillar box on your right, you will see a sign on your left saying Sea Otter Cottage. Drive down an unmade road, through the gate, and start to unwind. The front door to Sea Shore Cottage is the first property you come to, adjoining Sea Otter Cottage (also available for rental), which is...
