Flying in? There's Ackergill Haven in the bay beyond Ackergill Tower
Only two miles out of Wick and Tesco and it looks like we're driving straight into the sea.
In winter, after annexe rebuild, not quite so attractive - but the location still - WOW
Past the re-built Sea Shore Cottage to Sea Otter's Front Door
Go in and turn left for the small living room.
New stove but new mantle shelf unaffordable so far.
But then look out through those french doors - and catch your breath!
When the tide's in - Hope I don't feel too seasick,!
Such amazing sunsets over the castle next door. At high tide every ripple in pink.
But maybe the tide's out when you arrive
Never mind - just check the tide clock and check when you'll next see the waves up close.
What a view from the kitchen window, with a millionaire's restored castle next door
Gather around the table for breakfast
Downstairs Bathroom. Big bath. High quality shower
Just inside the front door. Turn right instead of left and see the cosy downstairs double bedroom.
Stairs a bit steep - Never be allowed under new building regulations.
But worth the climb - Is that an Oyster Catcher? Where's that sea bird book?
Top of the stairs on the right. That double bed looks welcoming.
Top of the stairs turn left - for the room with two single beds and the same spectacular views
Beautiful, rugged shoreline
Fancy having virtually our own private beach
No time to watch TV - watching the waves is so much more relaxing
We just don't want to leave - Sea Otter - definitely unforgettable. Never mind - we'll be

Looking out north across sheltered Sinclair Bay towards Orkney and the Pentland Skerries lighthouse, this fully equipped, self-catering, semi-detached foreshore cottage has unforgettable sea views. As the tide comes in across the sheltered bay, you could be watching a living oil painting of the ocean surf. It might seem far north but is still south of all of Norway and is well worth the two hours scenic seaside journey on the road from lnverness. Orcas are regularly visible, seabirds and seals abound and guests even sometimes see our shy sea otter.

Two things which need to be noted. a) the main sitting room is small and only has easy room for 4 people (although more have been happy to squeeze in, and in summer most love to sit out on the decking anyway) and b) the two bedrooms with fantastic views of the sea can only be accessed up some...

The views from the lounge, kitchen and upstairs bedrooms are just stunning. Magical to have the ocean and beach on your doorstep. As Rupert clearly states, the stairs up are very steep, so do take care. The decor is dated, but everything is functional, and the bed upstairs was comfortable enough. Swivel chair in lounge should be removed. A car...

Management response:

Sorry about the swivel/rocking chair. By chance it was, apart from beds, the only furniture I ever bought new, in this case as a treat to myself when the re-build of Sea Shore had been completed. Of necessity, due to the amount of essential re-build and basic repairs, virtually everything else in both cottages has had to be purchased from...

We stayed here for 4 nights, 1st impression not great-then we saw the view. Nothing else mattered. Ok it needs a little updating but it was very clean and the beds were comfortable. The cottage was well equipped as well and although we only made breakfasts there we could have cooked a full meal as there was plenty of everything....

Management response:

So many people love the location that whenever funds allow we try to do as much updating as we can afford. Slow progress with achieving all we would like to improve but well worthwhile for so very many guests - So far 20 different countries, and from 12 different USA states

In need of a really low travel costs winter break? Check Trip Advisor for some amazingly low air fares, and Scotrail for senior citizen bargains. In January I was able to travel by EasyJet Luton-Inverness, and by comfortable but slow Scotrail Inverness-Wick. Total travel for less than £110 return!!

If, at the time of booking, rather than just paying the deposit,
you are able to pay the full amount early,
then a discount will usually be offered.

By prior arrangement with our local contact,
arriving earlier than 4 pm, or leaving after 10 am is usually acceptable.

An extra £10 is normally added for every person more than 2
i.e. if the price quoted for 2 people for a week is £450
then the quote for 3 people will usually be for £450 + £10 = £460.

If anyone wishes to stay for only 2 nights
instead of our usual minimu...

Sea Otter Cottage is situated in the small village of Ackergill Haven just 2 miles from Wick town centre. If driving you need to head north on the main A99 road towards John o'Groats. After leave Wick, drive past Tesco and the airfield, and about half a mile further on, just after a cafe and art shop on the left, you will see a signpost to Ackergill on your right. Follow the road straight on towards the sea. As you enter Ackergill there are some houses on the left - and after most of them, just opposite a pillar box on your right, you will see a sign on your left saying Sea Otter Cottage. Drive down an unmade road, through the gate, and start to unwind.

The front door to Sea Otter Cottage is down the left side of the building at the far end, past the newly-renovated Sea Shore Cottag...
