About the neighbourhood
The Heart of Southsea
Palmerston Road: Just north of Southsea Common, Palmerston Road is the main shopping area with an interesting mix of national retailers, smaller specialist stores, cafes and restaurants.
The major shops and stores are located on the pedestrianised section of Palmerston Road precinct with large department stores for Debenhams and Knight and Lee (part of the John Lewis chain, who have had a shop on the road since 1887 but it was destroyed in 1941 during The Blitz, and then rebuilt and re-opened in 1956.
Osborne Road (The Restaurant Quarter): Just around the corner of the main shopping precinct with lots of lovely independent food places such as Like A Tea Tray, Southsea Coffee and award-wnning butchers Buckwells.

Public transport options
Taxis are efficient and reasonable priced. From Heathrow and Gatwick airports can be arranged in advance and booked on-line. The cost is GBP 60 each way for a normal car.
The nearest train station is Fratton (about 1 mile). The fastest trains from London are from Waterloo. All Portsmouth bound trains stop there then and then go on to Portsmouth and Southsea and Portsmouth Harbour. There is also a direct train from Gatwick, that takes about an hour. From the Ferry port it is best to get a taxi directly.
