About the neighbourhood
Ideally placed for exploring the Lake District and Eden Valley, the attractive, rural villages of Knock and Milburn are just five miles from the historic town of Appleby. Situated in the heart of the lush Eden Valley, Appleby-in-Westmorland was originally the county town of Westmorland and is a major stop on the Settle-to-Carlisle Railway -one of the most beautiful train journeys in Britain. A vast number of these old steam trains travel along this famous line and over the awe-inspiring Ribblehead viaduct, giving patrons a chance to see the landscape from a whole new perspective. People who visit Appleby in July will experience the Jazz Festival – an event that is fast becoming a popular attraction – whilst throughout the year guests can enjoy a walk on the Pennine Way at Dufton or explore... more
Getting around
We are located in a central location ideal for visiting either the Lakes, North Pennines, Hadrians Wall and the Westmorland Dales and recommend a car to take advantage of this. You can travel by train to Penrith on the West Coast and hire a car at Penrith or Temple Sowerby and while you are here we also recommend a trip on the Settle-Carlisle railway where you can travel from Appleby to either Carlisle, Skipton, Settle and Leeds on one of the most scenic routes in the country.
Car advised
How to get there
Airport: Tees Valley Airport, Darlington: 93.0 km
Railway: Appleby-in-Westmorland or Penrith West Coast Line: 8.0 km
Ferry: Newcastle upon Tyne: 120.0 km
If travelling North on the M6 then we recommend leaving at J38 Tebay and take the first turning signposted Appleby. This is a lovely scenic route via Orton and over Orton Fell with tremendous views or if you prefer main roads then use J40 Penrith, take the A66 East to Appleby/Scotch Corner, 10 miles longer but duration about the same.
