The Site
Is a grassy field with a pond, wild flowers and nectar mixes, and over 3 acres of newly planted trees and hedges. We have various bird boxes and feed stations in the mixes to encourage wild birds and pollinators. There is a Mad Hatters theme and signs scattered around the site with a trail for the curious ones and a small play house. Each pitch is named with its own sign. Over the next 12 months we are planning a rainy day shed. There is a small pond with benches scattered around it and several public footpaths close by. The walk to Ely is along the River Ouse with amazing views of Ely Cathedral.

All of the pitches have tall tussocky grasses with wild flowers growing in them as their border. The tent pitches are higgledy piggledy with twisty paths cut into the tall grasses. Each pitch has its own fire pit and name – you...

Interaction with guests
The site is situated on an arable farm, growing milling wheat, oil seed rape, potatoes and sugar beet depending on the rotation. We have a variety of pets including dogs, ponies and chickens. As an active member of Ely Nature Friendly Farming Zone, we are striving to increase the biodiversity of the farms, and connect our wildlife habitats with our neighbouring farmers. There is a wealth of information on the internet on how we can all help our local native wildlife, and reduce our environmental impact. We are planning to purchase and look after (although I’m somewhat scared) our own bee hive – fingers crossed I get some friendly bees!”

Nice welcome to Site. Site has been very well laid out with lots of space between pitches. Toilet / Shower block very clean and well thought out. Semi hard paths from pitches to toilets mean no wet grass to walk through. We had a lovely...More

About the neighbourhood
Situated on our arable farm, just 2 miles from the centre of Ely.
The Cambridgeshire fens have their own distinct scenery, with amazing sunsets and space. You can see the sunset around Ely Cathedral from the site, or sit on the benches around the pond listening to the wildlife. The site is teaming with bees, butterflies, dragonflies and birds. We have resident hares, moorhens, and roe deer which visit the site.
Cars are not essential as you can walk or cycle into Ely, catch a train to Cambridge or Norfolk.

How to get there
Airport: Stansted: 80.0 km
Railway: Ely: 3.2 km
From Ely head towards Queen Adelaide on the B1382. Half way through the village at the cross roads take the road marked Branch Bank heading towards Littleport. This is a straight road for approximately 1 mile, then goes through a bend and after approximately 200m turn right into the drive for Mad Hatters Campsite.

From Littleport on the large roundabout with signs for Mildenhall (A1101), Downham Market (A10) head towards Ely along Branch Bank. This road is quite bumpy – but stay on it for approximately 2.5 miles (go over the river staying on the main road). The campsite is on your left before the bend.
