We had a wonderful week at Half Moon Cottage. It's positioned in a quiet area, and is modern and very clean. On arrival at the cottage we immediately felt at home. There was a delicious cake and a bottle of locally produced apple juice to welcome us. The cottage is well equipped, comfortable and clean. About the neighbourhood
Ryes rich and colourful past can be traced all the way back to Roman times when, before it was separated from the sea by marsh, the towns original location offered a safe haven in the English Channel. Before its restoration to the English Crown by Henry III in 1247, the town was under French rule and it is thought that the name of Rye originates from the Norman French 'la Rie' meaning bank.
During the Middle Ages, in recognition of its role in defence of the south coast, Rye was invested as one of the two Antient Townes of the Confederation of Cinque Ports, the other being nearby Winchelsea.
