This is the medieval borgo of Calitri where your retreat, Casa della Feritoia is located.
View of the Castle from downtown Calitri. Our home in the medieval center is just behind the castle.
Another view across town to the castle.
Welcome to the entry to the ancient Calitri borgo.
Not far ahead to your home away.
The past is everywhere.
A turn, up through the tunnel, and you have arrived.
Our quiet front courtyard/front door accessible through an ancient entryway tunnel.
The remodeled kitchen has everything you might need.
That other important part of the Cucina, ... the kitchen table!
... and the food? Well, this is Italy isn't it, where everything tastes just great.
You can sit and sag right here to read a book, write that novel.
A relaxing spot in a corner of the large kitchen/dining room.
View from kitchen / dining area toward the master bedroom.
As I said, rooftops in the historic medieval village cascade down the mountainside.
An additional room serves as a combined guest room (2 single beds) and entertainment space.
The entertainment area features a TV and universal DVD along with a stack of movies.
The entertainment area has a couch that opens into a sofa bed.
You are in Aglianico and Sangiovese wine country! Be sure to also try our DOCG rated Taurasi !
A look off to the east at sunrise from the terrace, balcony, or windows and our extinct volcano.
... and just up above your retreat is the Castle. Look forward to taking a tour via the Pro Loco.
From the castle, here is a look across the more modern rooftops toward downtown Calitri.
... a town where culture and friendly souls abound.
and history tells its story to this day.
Back inside, this is the master bedroom with a Queen size bed - right down to the bed skirt!
You'll get used to it also - the Italian afternoon nap!
Definitely worth the wait, it took us quite a while to find this classic bed.
Another look at this restful spot with a balcony view of the Borgo at your feet .
Another early morning view off into the valleys below from the master bedroom balcony.
You access the rooftop terrace from the master bedroom up this 'Stairway to Heaven'.
Above the early morning clouds, you'd think it was Heaven!
In addition to panoramic views, the terrace features a seasonal gas grill.
More of the terrace and its amenities. The terrace, a recent addition, here is none other like it.
Our medieval hillside by night. You will love the food, friendliness, and your stay here. Venire.
Italy beckons and our comfortable home, your home from home, awaits your memorable first stay.

Calitri, Province of Avellino, Campania
Looking for a carefree vacation holiday in a medieval Italian hamlet (Borgo) far from the hassle and hustle of large cities like Rome? That would put you in the real side of Italy among the rolling countryside of Calitri. It is a place still innocent of tourists, untainted by globalization. Our home, just off a 'borgo' main avenue from Piazza della Repubblica (free parking), goes back centuries, as evidenced by its name ... “Casa della Feritoia” or “House of the Arrow Slot”. Yes, 'arrow slot', as in narrow opening through which you could shoot arrows at attackers! Casa della Feritoia was completely renovated in 2007 and consists of a large two bedroom, single level home located high on a mountainside in the medieval section of Calitri. Entrance is from a street level, semi-private courtyard. Radiating from a combined k... Read more

Interaction with guests
Owner's agent will meet you upon arrival, walk you to the property, and get you settled. She will be your go-to person for any assistance. Situated in Calitri's medieval Borgo on cobbled streets requires that you are able to walk to the rental (property is not handicap accessible). Some up-slope grades and stairs occur along the route, which is less than 1/4 mile from the parking area.

The time of the year -January is not usually snowy and iced over so this period of time for us this year due to the strange snow weather events was not ideal for staying in Calitri .
I feel sure it has much more to offer in the summer and warmer months .
The locality is great for touring to small towns and coastal cities .
The house was quite comfortable - good heating in the kitchen dining area were we spent most of our time .
We did have some issues with tv, internet and heating services which were out of the owners control and were looked after by the realtor agent in time .
The piazza were we had to park our car was 250 metres uphill to the house which was a bit of a struggle with shopping and suitcases but worth it when the view presents itself at the end !
The restaurants in the local area and in the town (by car ) were great - especially the la gatta cenerentola - pick of the town !
Groceries are very cheap compared to northern prices - so living...

We were in Calitri for a few days and were very happy we stayed at the Casa della Feritoia. The place was cozy, comfortable and in a great location. The views from the master bedroom and rooftop terrace were amazing! The owner Paul was very friendly and helpful with directions and restaurant recommendations. My wife's great-grandfather grew up in Calitri before moving to the U.S., which is why we visited Calitri while we were in Italy. Our point of contact Emma even took us to the registry office where a guy named Vito did some research on my wife's ancestors. We actually met a couple of her distant relatives who still live in Calitri. All in all it was a great experience. We would love to go back someday and would definitely stay in this house again.
