Holiday Rental House
Braywood House, four miles outside Windsor, Berkshire, has one of England’s oldest forests for its back garden. You approach along 600m of driveway, with greenery meeting overhead, until the trees step back like courtiers and expose the house — and a view across 20 miles of countryside. Inside, the house is crammed full of period features from fireplaces to antique crystal chandeliers yet the decor has a contemporary twist. There is a bespoke state of the art kitchen designed by Anthony Mullen, 2 reception rooms with fireplaces and phenomenal views over the countryside, a gym, laundry room and cloakroom on the ground floor. Upstairs you will find 4 large double bedrooms, again all with wonderful views. The master bedroom has an ensuite shower room and there is also a family bathroom with shower. The house is fully equipped with a Sonos sound system, voice activated lighting system and has central heating. Built in 1861, Braywood was originally a vicarage. Flint-faced, with Bath stone detailing, it has arched eyebrows over its mullioned windows and a hint of a gingerbread house in its curvy decorative woodwork. The attendant church, despite featuring in a Hammer horror film with Oliver Reed, was demolished in the 1960s, but its aisle and a score of graves form a part of the front garden, where you can stroll and stroke your chin and think profound thoughts. The 10 acres of gardens are a real joy from the kitchen garden immediately behind the house, which faces South and where you can enjoy leisurely lunches in the shade of the wisteria draped pergola to the forest areas full of ancient trees, a treehouse and even a zip wire for the more adventurous! But the house’s most notable feature lies beyond its nominal boundaries — the 3,100ha of Windsor and Swinley forests, with their thousands of ancient oak and beech trees. Some of these trees predate the forests’ establishment under William the Conqueror, and many have stout trunks but modest crowns, a sign of their pollarding in the centuries since Elizabeth I began serious timber production here. Walking or riding in this part of Windsor Forest usually involves keys and permits and conversations with the Crown Estate office. Braywood House, though, has free access. Indeed, for much of its perimeter the garden has no boundary with the forest apart from a seeping ditch. Trees have crossed this ditch and climbed the slope to mingle with Braywood’s collection of exotic saplings. One colossal oak, thought to be 600 years old, has reached the front garden, where it casts a green shade the size of a circus tent. More
