Holiday Rental House
High Nelly Cottage is a thatched cottage situated in the heart of the picturesque village of Clough. The cottage is over 350 years old and retains many of its original features including a fully functioning cast iron coal fired kitchen range. Once this is lit it becomes the heart of the cottage providing not only a cosy coal fire but a cooking experience too. The cottage has the original design of two lofted bedrooms each with its own little staircase. The lounge, kitchen and dining area being open plan. Separate pantry and showered room. The cottage is sited next door, 100 yards away from the quaint village pub and opposite the village church. The cottage is detached and has garden with seating and table and enjoys country views. The cottage is sited next door, 100 yards away from the quaint village pub and opposite the village church. The cottage is detached and has garden with seating and table and enjoys country views. The ideal little cosy cottage to spend a few days simply taking time out, taking your friends and dogs for a walk or cycle along the quiet country lanes that circle the village or perhaps a tramp around Grants Town Lake or Dunmore woods both 5 mins away in car then either back to relax by the fire in the cottage or enjoy a drink in Mary's Bar next door. For a more challenging trek why not try one of the 16 circular walks in the local Sleive Bloom Mountains, guided walks most Sundays. Golf, fishing, horse riding, the ancient city of Kilkenny all on your door step. Or if it's simply to come to snuggle down under the thatch, in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine with your best friend then that's fine too.More

High Nelly is a quintessentially Irish experience. This old thatched cottage, which dates back to the 17th century, is perfect for those seeking tranquil, traditional accommodation in one of the more overlooked parts of the country. Bar a separate bathroom and utility room, the entire...More

Interesting cottage with a fascinating history. Appreciated all the more as some of the history is provided. Not the warmest of accommodation although we purchased a bag of coal as suggested. This may have been because we've no experience with coal fires but it didn't...More

Everything was lovely and the cottage was as we expected, as usual the worse thing is having to leave and return to your every day life, but it was a lovely break in a peaceful location. That we hope to return to again hopefully

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in the cottage. The cottage itself is gorgeous, really quaint and full of character, with the advantage of outdoor space. The cottage was lovely and warm, although I'd imagine it could get quite chilly in winter. It's in a lovely...More

About the neighbourhood
Known for its bogs and the largest table top mountain in Europe. A 45 min drive to the Historic city of Kilrkenny and 1.30hrs from Dublin and Cork cities. Abbeyleix is a small historic town 10 mins drive from the cottage, famous for making the hand tuffted carpets for the Titanic.
How to get there
Bus from the main ports and airports to Abbeyleix then a short ride to Clough in a taxi. The same for rail travellers, our nearest train station being Portlaoise.
