Porto do Son, Province of A Coruna, Galicia
Built over 300 years ago, this comfortable two storey stone cottage with low beamed ceilings and stone flagged floors downstairs has been renovated in recent years, adding a modern wing for the owners and restoring the old part to conform to its original style, but with the addition of a big modern bathroom and fully equipped kitchen. It is set in extensive gardens, where you can relax with a cool drink admiring panoramic views of the gentle slopes of the Barbanza mountains.
This is suitable for up to 4 people and is an ideal base for exploring the towns, countryside and coastline of Galicia. It's only a short distance from shops, restaurants and beach yet still in a peaceful and tranquil location and with very easy accessibility.

The location is amazing - 10 minutes to the nearest beach which was absolutely beautiful and ideal for young children. Other than a chiringuito close by where we could buy drinks and ice creams, the beach was not at all commercialised. The cottage is in...More

Such a wonderful place, lovingly restored to maintain the historical features! It has spacious rooms with lots of character. If we hadn't been running around sightseeing so much, we would've enjoyed spending time in the beautiful front garden. Miguel and Jenne are fabulous hosts! Jenne...More

Local Background

The town of Porto do Son itself is a small typical Galician fishing port full of charm with its attractive stone paved narrow streets and its gardens and park fronting the harbour and beach. It is situated on the Ria de Muros y Noia, the northernmost of the Rias Baixas or big estuaries that comprise the southern coastal region of Galicia. There is a magnificent viewing spot, the Atalaya, looking out onto the Atlantic and up the Ria. In the town you will find well stocked small shops, supermarkets supplying virtually all your needs, plus all the normal services, banks, post office, heath centre, church etc, as well as a fresh fish market displaying the local catch. There are a number of excellent restaurants in the town, especially down near the port. The bars in the Plaza...

Getting around
A car is really the best way to explore the region but there is a reasonable bus service within a couple of kilometres that provides access to several towns locally. There is a bus depot in the nearby town of Noia from where buses operate to major cities like Santiago and A Coruña.

How to get there
Airport: Santiago de Compostela: 50.0 km
Railway: Santiago de Compostela: 45.0 km
Ferry: Santander/ Bilbao/Gijon: 370.0 km
The little fishing port of Porto do Son is easily reached in less than an hours drive (about 50 km) on excellent roads from either the Airport or Train station at Santiago de Compostela. There are also airports at La Coruna or Vigo which are within comfortable driving distance adding maybe an hour to the journey. If travelling from the UK or France (St. Nazaire) by ferry, then on arrival in Spain, the trip down would take between 5 and 8 hours, dependent upon the port but would provide you with the opportunity of seeing the spectacular Cantabrian coastline and some of the typically beautiful countryside of Galicia. We will gladly provide a suggested route and map on request. The road had been upgraded considerably recently and most of it is possible on motorways. For those wanting a much... more
