Paco de Lucia Monument
Paco de Lucia was born in Algeciras on Dec. 21, 1947. He died in Mexico on Feb. 26, 2014. He was a genius with the flamenco guitar, probably the best that Spain has produced. He had a CD called “Entre Dos Aguas”, which was a masterpiece. Among his prizes were the Premio Nacional de Guitarra de Arte Flamenco, the Medalla de Oro al Mérito en las Bellas Artes in 1992, the Distinción Honorífica de los Premios de la Música in 2002, the Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes in 2004 and a Doctor Honoris Causa of the Universidad de Cádiz. Another prize was given to him by the Berklee College of Music of the University of Boston in 2010.
There is a bronze sculpture of him created by the artist Nacho Falgueras in 1994, showing him playing his guitar. This is located at the Rotonda del Varadero at the junction of Paseo Victoria Eugenia and Calle Ponce de Leon. This is at the entrance to Algeciras.
