If you want to get away from the coach tours, and general 'Commercial Ville' then head on to Russell to experience some real laid back kiwi life. Russell is a wonderful unique town full of beauty and charm. There are plenty of restaurants along the waterfront and the next street back along with NZs oldest Church and the Duke of Marlborough Hotel holding NZs first license. There are also several watering holes to sit back and 'people watch'. Apart from the main beach a 15 minute walk takes you over the hill to Long Beach, which is a long sandy beach, often deserted. From there you can swim, dive, relax, look over at the islands and even watch dolphins if you're lucky. You won't be disappointed with the quiet, laid back beauty of Russell.
