All over the island of Madeira, there are plenty of events and festivals held throughout the entire year.

Perhaps the most notable festival on Madeira is the Flower Festival , held every year during spring.  This event is all about flowers, and the main city of Funchal is the focus, where floats, parades, and great events fill the streets for days.  Each year, groups from around the island delight the crowds with costumed dance performances.  For more information click here.

Amongst many other places around the world, Carnival is celebrated on Madeira as well.  Throughout Carnival (held every year in late February), there are two main parades that consume the streets of Funchal.  The Madeira celebration is said to be one of the best throughout all of Europe.

The Atlantic Festival is held yearly throughout the month of June.  This event is a combination of three smaller parts, the fireworks competition (held every Saturday night throughout the month), the philharmonic band performances, and the Madeira Music Festival. In July, you can attend two other music festivals: Funchal Jazz and Atlantic Roots Festival (for world music lovers).

In November, you cannot miss Madeira Gourmet Festival, being held in the first week, bringing to the island several Michelin starred Chefs like Marc Meneau, Raymond Blanc and Jacques Le Divellec, between others.

During Christmas and New Years is a great time to visit the island.  The streets are decorated, people are happy, and the island is filled with joyful music.

The annual Madeira Film Festival will run from April 16 - 21 2013 and is held at Reid's Palace. The festival screens nature related films in recognition of Madeira's Laurissilva forest.
