Santana village lies on the north coast, towards the east side of the island of Madeira, and is named after the mother of the Virgin Mary. It is often included in island tours and draws visitors not only because of its picturesque views, but because it is home to many of the famous palheiros. These traditional little triangular houses are typically Madeiran, and the nicest ones have thatched roofs and are painted white, red, and blue.
