As the autumn weather starts settling in here in the northeast US my thoughts go to the soul rousing three weeks my wife and I spend in East Africa this past July. One of our fondest memories centers on the beautiful and overwhelmingly welcoming Alex Walker's original Serian camp located in the heart of the Mara North Conservancy in Kenya about 155 miles west of Nairobi, half the distance to Lake Victoria in the lush and gorgeous Masai Mara. The area is teeming with an amazing variety of mammals and birds both large and small. For you reptile lovers, lots of crocs as well. Almost as soon as you head out from the small Mara North bush airstrip you are almost instantly surrounded by elephant, zebra, giraffe, Topi, Thompson and Grant gazelle (and numerous other species of antelope), and these are just the incidental sightings on the short trip from the strip to the camp. The Serian camp itself, located on a high bank only yards above the Mara River, consists of several thatched structures containing the dining and other common areas and "tents" appointed with comfy four poster beds, wooden floors and hand knotted rugs, suggesting that you have arrived at a relative's welcoming home rather than an exotic camp over a 100 miles from the nearest urban population center.

Having spent two nights in Serian Nkorombo, I moved onto the main camp.

I really enjoyed the Nkorombo camp (see other review) and was looking forward to experiencing the main camp…I was not disappointed…the main camp and the staff are amazing.

This camp is located right beside the river, it’s a lovely location, and to be honest, while the drives are top class, you could easily just spend a day in the camp relaxing and chatting, enjoying the environment…it wouldn’t be a wasted day.

I had a vehicle to myself from the time I arrived at Nkorombo until left the main camp, Jonathan and Doreen were my guides for the entire time. They were great, knowledgeable, engaging and always on the lookout for something different. I really enjoyed my time with them and appreciated all their efforts to my time and the drives memorable. (FYI – having an exclusive vehicle is a bonus, not that I mind having other traveller along, but it gives flexibility to do whatever you wish each time you go out – every morning and evening)

As for what I saw, everything I could imagine and more, you won’t be disappointed!

My tent was fab! High spec, separate adjacent tent with the shower and bath, and an on suite additional toilet and washroom in the tent. A great deck to sit and look over the river and have the morning wake up coffee.

The staff could not do enough for me, one and all – I don’t see so good at night, the manager Suzi made sure everybody who needed to know, knew and I could see all the staff were looking out for me, and indeed, Suzi walked me back to my tent each night, linking me to make sure I didn’t trip. If you have any issues, they will do everything in their power to resolve, it’s quite something to behold

I absolutely loved my stay, and should you choose to stay here, I would find it difficult to imagine that you would be disappointed

For us the best thing about this lodge was having your own vehicle and guide/driver. Nothing could be more exclusive for us (and other wildlife loving people) than that! Our tent was the stuff of legend. Huge! Big veranda and day beds for lazing around on hot afternoons! During the day it opens on all sides - felt like we were living in the middle of the mara! On the riverfront! Don't think we have ever felt this close to nature and this relaxed before. Food was good. Desserts even better. Service incomparable and very personal! We had a great rapport with the whole team there - won't mention names as everyone was amazing. Best wishes from Dhruv and Kavita (Nairobi)

We loved every moment from the time that we picked up at the airstrip to the time that we were taken back. Our Maasai guides, Irene and Simon, (both spoke very good English) found every animal that we could have expected to see. All the staff in the camp were lovely; big shout out to Siana and Fatima for being such fun. After our four night stay we felt that we had been friends with them for years. We had been a little apprehensive about the idea of ‘family dining’ as we would not normally go for communal eating, but we thoroughly enjoyed it. Every meal was an opportunity to talk to interesting people and exchange stories of our adventures (it gets quite competitive!). There is no fence around the property so we were warned that we should not venture out alone at night. A member of staff, armed with a stout stick, escorted us to to and from out tent after dark. We encountered two zebras outside our tent during the day and heard animal noises at night (the hippos were very loud) but we always felt safe. The tent was well appointed, with an en-suite loo and hand basin. There was a separate tent with bath, shower, basins and loo a few feet away. This was our first safari camp and we cannot think of anything which could have improved it.

I usually don't write reviews but I want anybody who is thinking of going on a safari to have the same great experience that we had! From the moment our guides met us, we felt like we were home. Our guides Dennis and Judy were phenomenal! We had an instant connection with them. They were both so knowledgeable and their expertise was amazing. After our first drive back to the camp we were welcomed with open arms. It was Karibu nyumbani(welcome home) when we got there. They worked with us in learning swahili! Siana & Fatuma are the most wonderful people in the world! They were so hospitable and attentive to make it such a remarkable experience. They were so excited because they were told I was going to propose to my girlfriend there. They went above and beyond in helping make that night so romantic and memorable!(she said yes) The staff was beyond great! Everybody was so nice! The food was amazing(and I'm a picky eater). They kept you full with food and drinks! We stayed in the giraffe room. Nice view of the mara river from higher up. The tent was amazing. It has a bush toilet(right next to our bed) and then a separate tent a couple feet away with another toilet, shower, and tub. I don't think you can go wrong with any tent there! I would highly recommend staying a night at "the nest". Its a treehouse in which you have to walk to(they said about 20 minutes but it seemed shorter) we had to cross the bridge to get over there and that was an experience in its own right. We woke up to such a beautiful sunrise view with a hippo right at the base of the nest! To put it in perspective, it absolutely downpoured the walk over and rained most of the night which limited some of the space we could use but it was still such a memorable night! I could imagine how great it would be to just lay on the bed and just look up at the stars. I can't say enough at how much everybody there made our experience more than we could ever have imagined. For only being there about 4 days, the everlasting impression everybody made on us was something you can't put into words. Siana, Fatuma, Denis & Judy will always have a special place in my heart! 5 out of 5 stars doesn't even do it justice. Can I give 10 out of 5 stars? It was that amazing. If you ever go on a safari this is the place to go! Not only for the personable experience but also the game drives were more than we expected. We saw so much in the time we were there. That is mostly in part to our guides knowing the land and the animals like the back of their hands. I could go on and on but you only live once so go on a safari at Serian the original it might just be the best thing you do in your life!
