We were here > 15 years ago & the place has never been touched/revamped in my view BUT now for all the positives I recommend his place for:
-the staff experience & their overall efficiency & service levels are commendable except maintenance dpt who dragged their feet & never arrived on the 2 occasions we needed them
-the beach - a shuttle takes & brings you back after some hours of leisure - there are change rooms ,a small table tennis, a pool table & a tiny cafeteria where they play music to keep this place lively...this was all a nice surprise
-the Laundry room was most welcome at R2 per machine/load
-Huge Lounge & Bar area - quite modern vs the look of the entire facility -- great couches & many TV screens covering most sports. Active waiters here & a reasonable menu(the ribs with gravy were great). the cocktails are lovely but do need an extra kick:-)
-the golfers seemed happy in their carts ,course etc
-Wahoo is big served the most awesome breakfasts(variety & sparking wine!). Buffets at dinner did not disappoint either
-wifi is ltd at 30mins/50MB so bring along your 3G card if you a stickler for data like my family is
-a creche of sorts for the young ones & a Games Room for the older kids....mine had a fun time & made friends but also complained about the old fashioned nature of the facilities in here
-the pool area has its own bar service & all seemed to be going well there as well
-housekeeping was prompt
-porters are quick despite the challenge of stairs & no lifts---poor guys.
-Port Alfred is a mere 28km away & so we had our 1st night dinner at the Link restaurant which was great! The Wharf Pub also seemed ok except the heat that was unbearable indoors

And so they need to work hard on refurbishing the rooms/the Spa/even the Wahoo Restaurant. Why is such a great facility being ignored by Southern Sun group? It is very sad & a mystery to me. Akhona at reception let me in on the fact that the new manager is a new broom who has a plan for this so i do trust that the group will support him whoever he is(he needs to pop into the public areas & say hi to his guests given the state of the place & the enthusiasm of his staff).

Overall a lovely family resort that just needs a lift like the group did many other establishments of theirs!

Room Tip: this hotel has no lifts so choose rooms in the 200-300 vs 400-500 which is quite a walk

Price is average for what you get. Staff could be way friendlier and more efficient. Food is average, plenty but not tasty. There is a great need for upkeep. Service is slow, whether it be a beer or coffee. Suggestions would be to add a car wash service, hire out golf carts for hotel guests and upgrade air conditioning . This was sadly not a Sun International experience.

We've been to fish river sun many times over the past years and although it is not a typical hotel experience it is one of our favourite places to go in South Africa. The accommodation is very spacious- it could do with an update especially the carpets- but the rooms are kept immaculately clean and are very well equipped with air conditioning throughout. Although access to the beach isn't close there is a shuttle that runs between the hotel and beach. You can also walk along this route (allow for allow 15-20 minutes) or take a more scenic walk via the trail towards the bat cave. The food is nice and there is always a big variety (our rate included dinner and breakfast) but if you prefer self catering then the rooms do have a kitchenette and there are communal braai areas and port alfred (20 min drive away) has a number of shops. Do expect a family resort experience. The pool is beautiful and pristine. We don't play golf but the golf course is stunning. The biggest draw card is the beach at fish river which is one of a kind with kilometres of soft sand and dunes to walk along. Be sure to stop at Port Alfred to get a license to pick up shells because you will find the most incredible shells on this beach.

Stayed for 5 days with the family. We had a really great stay. The hotel is really clean and tidy with really impressive service. The food was fantastic with good variety at both breakfast and dinner. Lots to do for the kids. Will definitely return soon.

Wonderful to visit this venue. Golf cart available to take guests down to the sea. It is a scenic drive that goes between the golf course. There is a small bar that sells the coldest beer in the Eastern Cape. Sitting drinking a beer looking at the sea.
