Description: Graze by the River is a coffee bar and bistro situated in one of the original 1820 settler's home next to the banks of the Kowie River in Port Alfred. The venue boasts a private garden area at the back of the property where you can escape from the busy Van der Riet street at the front of the property and enjoy freshly roasted coffee or sample some of the many homemade dishes on offer. The menu is based on locally available produce from fresh seafood, smoked meats and organic vegetables grown in the garden on site, interesting tasty dishes are supplemented by daily specials. The restaurant has its own smoker for preparing a lot of the dishes and the coffee bar roasts its own green beans daily ensuring good quality fresh coffee. So whether your looking for a great breakfast, some coffee and cake or a tasty homemade meal come and enjoy the experience of Graze by the River. Evening meals are strictly by reservation and we are closed on Wednesday.

We drank coffee here and ate a fabulous cake, but it was not enough to eat just for the meal. The ambiete, the friendliness, the great service cause the time we were allowed to spend with Grace incomparable.

Whilst staying with friends in Port Alfred before Xmas we discovered this little gem, and ate there several times. The charming shabby-chic premises are run by Nick and his wife. She sells delightful eclectic gifts in the shop at the front whilst Nick cooks amazing food at the back. The fresh fish and meat are prepared imaginatively and it is difficult to choose as all the menu items are enticing. We also enjoyed a couple of breakfasts in the garden. I highly recommend this delightful affordable restaurant, and hope to return from U.K. before too long.

In my travels the Gernsy and Jersey Islands offered without doubt the best sea food I have see or tasted anywhere. We arrived in Port Alfred with one intention and that was to eat at the well reviewed Graze by the River.

The owner is the chef and he comes from Jersey Island. As we entered the front of his business my wife lit up like a Christmas tree and I have to say I'm not normally excited by curios but the restaurant is in the garden at the back and the house is well stocked with quality items that yearn for you to spend.

Once you get into the garden the restaurant is casual and very comfortable. Nick greeted us and we were entertained with his warm personality that we normally associate with a close friend.

I chose the smoked mussles fresh in the morning from East London. Nick smoked them himself and they were served in a lemon butter sauce. The entre was filling with 20 mussels.

The main course of cod caught that morning was cooked to perfection and flaked into delicious slithers that simply dissolved in your mouth.

Desert brought a smile to our faces and my wife had to take a photo of the Belgian chocolate dessert.

How can you praise and glorify adequately when the food, chef and entire experience was sublime. We fed 5 adults and 2 kids with a meal one can not find in Johannesburg and it all cost with wine and beers R1600

I shall return again and again.
