Description: Graze by the River is a coffee bar and bistro situated in one of the original 1820 settler's home next to the banks of the Kowie River in Port Alfred. The venue boasts a private garden area at the back of the property where you can escape from the busy Van der Riet street at the front of the property and enjoy freshly roasted coffee or sample some of the many homemade dishes on offer. The menu is based on locally available produce from fresh seafood, smoked meats and organic vegetables grown in the garden on site, interesting tasty dishes are supplemented by daily specials. The restaurant has its own smoker for preparing a lot of the dishes and the coffee bar roasts its own green beans daily ensuring good quality fresh coffee. So whether your looking for a great breakfast, some coffee and cake or a tasty homemade meal come and enjoy the experience of Graze by the River. Evening meals are strictly by reservation and we are closed on Wednesday.

We recently visited Graze by the River, attracted partly by the beautiful old building it is housed in, and also by the fact that it is an organic restaurant. I am pleased to say we were not at all disappointed. We are a difficult family to please, as my husband is a committed carnivore, my daughter is hovering on the brink of veganism, and I am a chef of 30 years experience with a virulent allergy to sulphite preservatives.
We were immediately charmed by the eclectic decor and rustic building with its beautiful garden and courtyard. We chose to sit inside but the garden certaily looked like a good alternative for a lovely day. The owner/chef greeted us enthusiastically and explained his specials of the day. I was instantly impresed by his knowledge of seasonal produce and his passion for organics, which we share.
My husband chose the Karoo lamb chops on a root vegetable mash. He is a butcher, so knows his meat and I am pleased to say he was impressed. The lamb was cooked perfectly and seasoned with attention to its natural flavour, which is rare today. Allowing the natural sweetness and herbaceous qualities of the lamb to shine through was a pleasure to taste and much appreciated. The vegetable mash was delicious, if a tiny bit underseasoned. But rather underseasoned than over, so it was easily remedied. The addition of fresh vegetables to the mash added an additional flavour and texture to the dish which was lovely.
I chose a chilli spiked gazpacho, laced with fresh coriander and garlic. Having worked in the Mediterranean for a few years, any dish celebrating ripe tomatoes is a favourite of mine, and this did not disappoint. Well spiced and nicely textured, the soup hit the spot, and the freshly baked ciabatta accompanying the dish added the right amount of chewines and crunch. It is always more difficult seasoning a chilled dish, but the seasoning and flavours were spot on, punchy and aromatic.
Graze By the River is not to be missed if you are in Port Alfred. It is relaxed, friendly and certainly produces the goods, organic and all.

Dear saladdaze_fresh

Thank you for taking the trouble to review our establishment and we are very pleased that you and your husband enjoyed the whole experience so much. We are blessed here with an abundance of local producers who provide the restaurant with outstanding produce, we have fresh local fish delivered by bespoke local fishermen, fresh farm butter, cream and milk to name but a few and this coupled with our passion for good, healthy, wholesome cuisine makes for a winning combination. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you again when your next in the area

This is a lovely gentle spot. The gift shop has a lot of unique things to look at and the coffee shop at the back in the garden is quiet and quirky. Really suitable for those with disabilities.
Service was a bit slow, but then the whole town is a bit of a sleepy place.
Lunches are good too.

The owner is the chef, all his produce is fresh or from the farm.
It is open for lunch and some evenings. I would check and book in the season for dinner.
A little gem of a place, so friendly.

Lovely chilled breakfast, tasty food. Not an extensive breakfast menu, but the food really is worth it.
