This restaurant really was a mixed bag. As well documented the theme of this restaurant is cats. The interior décor was very cosy, romantically lit and well executed. We went here for the home made pasta. We had one dish each. Mine was an absolutely delicious twisted pasta (must have been home made) with gorgonzola and nut sauce. My mouth waters just thinking about it. However, this was a first course portion and I could have eaten far more. My partner had pasta with truffle. Lovely pasta with generous helping of truffle but sadly quite over seasoned. The service was generally friendly and good with a high standard of German spoken by the staff and OK English.
There were however two areas where we were not happy. The restaurant is classed as mid price. The pasta is quite expensive, mostly around E16 for veggie type options, but the antipasti and main courses commanded huge prices. For example E28 for an antipasti plate or E35 for a main.
The second issue was the degree of quite pushy upsell going on. We were "offered" various expensive options with huge disappointment when we failed to partake. This happened repeatedly and became quite annoying. My partner wanted a glass of wine and was told it would be much better for her to take the whole bottle. We insisted on just a glass and the waitress then came over with an opened bottle, poured a slug into her glass and informed us the bottle price was E50. Not a cheap glass of wine.
My advice is to go here if you are not hungry and want a well presented and tasty pasta dish in a pleasant environment. If you are hungry then I am sure you will enjoy it very much, at least until the bill comes.

At the end of 'the season', in any tourist town anywhere in the world, you can get the feeling that everyone is kind of over it. Often, it's not without good reason.
But in Maderno, a pretty town on the edge of the majestic Lake Garda in northern Italy, there is a small, quirky little restaurant swimming against the tide.
The owner speaks 4 languages and befriends all her customers.
Her chef is talented and a stickler for detail.
The portions are very generous and, while not cheap, the food is value for money. And there is an extensive wine list...all held in racks around the restaurant.
We had a fresh chicken (slow cooked at 75 degrees for 24 hours, explained the chef), bathed in a fragrant olive oil, on a nest of polenta. We also tried the Osso bucco, similarly slow cooked, and a chick pea salad.
But the standout was our entree, a simple tomato and mozarella salad but with the inspired addition of sweet slow cooked onions and shaved truffles. (A basket of infused balsamic vinegars is at your table and a variety of salts, along with a good bottle of olive oil - dress yourself!)
Dessert was a very nice cheesecake and good espresso.

This place is one of a kind. I may have forgotten to mention that almost every item in the busy interior has something to do with cats...pictures, plates, light shades, little statues..even the price tags on the wine! People bring the cat momentoes to the restaurant's owner from all over the world (hence the name).

So give this place a try if you're in this part of the world. It really is the cat's whiskers....

We had a very special diner at Gatto d'Oro. The host and cook are wonderful ladies, charming and attentives, and they expertly guided us through the menu and recommended a selection of fresh pasta dishes to share. The meal was delicious and they also recommended a great local wine. The restaurant is located close to the buzzing harbour area, just one block off the lake, and has a wonderful elevated terrasse. The owner is a cat lover and her restaurant is decorated with eclectic cat artefacts. Highly recommended!

We recently tried here for a meal (with no booking) and the staff were so nice! Sabina (the owner) & I think our waitress was called Monica, went out of their way for us. I explained that I was pregnant and they managed to get me some non alcoholic beer, the only one I found on our trip! It was nice to celebrate with my partner with something other than water! We sat outside on the patio and it had a very relaxed atmosphere. The two ladies were really busy but still managed to keep the customers happy, apologising for any wait etc. The food was nice too. Sabina actually brought us back to our accommodation because a thunder storm was starting and taxis aren't the easiest or cheapest things to get in such a small place. We were so grateful for this!

Thank you for such a lovely evening.
