I was with two foreigners as well and we arrived at the shop in Uji and not in the factory but they dive us to the factory without any complain, free of charge. We were not alone in the tour, we were with some Japanese families. You have to pay 500yen for the tour and they will give you a gift certificate worth 500yen so basically the tour is free. The tour includes welcome drink, experience in preparing your matcha which you will be drinking after with a dango, and seeing a replica of a traditional style tea house.

They have English speaking staff so no language problem, and I should note the staff are all friendly. The main person doing the tour speaks in Japanese but everything is translated. One of the things I really like about the tour is that they don't just give emphasis on their company but they give a very good explanation on the history and kinds of tea.

We were the only people on our tour, which was English speaking. They gave us a nice introduction to the company and its awards, green tea, the traditional tea ceremony in their in-house tea room, and matcha preparation. The kids enjoyed preparing their own matcha under our guide's watchful eye and took pride in showing their grandmother how to prepare the matcha that they brought home. I agree with the other reviewer saying that there is no food in the surrounding area, but take a snack in their small cafe at the end of your tour. Afterwards we cab'd back to Uji to enjoy all of the matcha sweets and offerings with our newfound appreciation for the tea. Fun experience!

This free 90 minute tour is in the Uji area of Kyoto when tea growing is famous. The factory is about 1.3 mile walk from the closest train station (Kintetsu train- Mukajima station), but the area around the factory is devoid of any charm so a cab ride from the train station is preferred. They will call a cab for you after the tour. They provide two tours per week in English, including an introductory film and tour that shows how matcha tea is made, with pictures of how they made it in the past. The tour includes a visit to a teahouse with a description of the customs about the teahouse, and you are given a demonstration of how to make (whip) maccha tea and then you are allowed to make (and drink) your own. They have a small gift/snack shop that sells tea and tea-flavored soft ice cream only – no other food in the immediate area so eat before you come. Not well known so we were the only couple on the tour, but definitely worth it if you have lots of time in Kyoto. Reservations required – have your concierge call.
