No place in the Caribbean compares to this small and friendly resort. Nowhere else can you walk off the beach and snorkel for hours and be entertained like here. Been here twice and i don't usually go back no matter how great, but there is a draw from the atmosphere to the staff that lure you to come back. I can't get enough of this place.

Room Tip: Love the condos....

Beautiful location. The coral reef in front of the hotel worth the stay alone. If you book a snorkeling adventure elsewhere in the island they will charge you $60 per person and take you right to the beachfront of this hotel. Save your money and just stay at this 4 star hotel!

We truly enjoy our stay at the Grand Roatan with our family. The location is excellent and the place is just beautiful and perfect to do snorkeling. Plus customer service is excellent, Kenny one of our waiters was always making sure we weren’t missing anything. Everyone was very nice!

My husband and I (he more so than me), primarily visited for the promise of a great snorkeling experience, and luckily, we were not disappointed. The further out we swam (some of the reef is bleached toward the shore), the better the visuals of many types of sea life, including a huge, sea turtle which swam within mere feet of my husband! What a sight! We brought our GoPro along to capture some pictures.

Otherwise, the amenities of this hotel rival a five star resort. The beds are relatively comfortable (even for a hotel bed), the pillows are fluffy soft (your head sinks into the pillow which I enjoy), our cabin was clean and well-stocked with plenty of free, filtered water (a five gallon water purifier was located in our cabin), the A/C ran effectively to keep up with the 90+ degree heat, and the outdoor, enclosed shower at the cabin was great for showering after a day on the hot beach - even if we had to use a plastic bottle to turn the shower knobs as not to shock ourselves from the electricity not grounding properly in the showers.

Just a word of warning: If you book a cabin, be prepared to walk up and down some steep hills, traverse narrow, sandy paths, and/or to frequently engage in climbing stairs. Our cabin was a “canopy view” so it was somewhat of an inconvenience to go back and forth to the room when something was needed.

The hearty, continental breakfast included pancakes, omelettes made-to-order, refried beans (which is part of a customary Honduran breakfast), fresh fruits, muffins, breads, cereal, yogurt, juices, and coffee. Lunch and dinner are considered to be “on your own,” but the prices were comparable to the US. The wait staff speak understandable English, in addition to Spanish.

I do recommend you bring a sufficient amount of US dollars and/or Honduran Lempira (both are readily accepted). The island has a 10% service charge on credit card purchases. Additionally, a sales tax of around 19-20% also applies (According to one of our tour guides on the trip, the government is generally thought by its residents to be corrupt, and residents are taxed beyond belief. Many residents on the island never benefit from the taxes they pay into). We had to make multiple trips to an ATM (BAC seemed to be the only ATM which worked with a VISA credit card) to pull cash for gift shop purchases, etc.

We read many reviews warning against keeping valuables unattended on the beach, and/or that the beach was generally unsafe at night. This is not at all the case! Maybe we were just lucky, but we kept items (cell phones, GoPro, sunglasses, etc.) hidden away, and no one ever bothered it. Security guards for each hotel also monitor the beach entrance areas so, at no point, did we ever feel unsafe or afraid. Our tour guide did mention that one of the only forms of work for natives on the island is through tourism, so it is considered a major, punishable crime for a local to cause any harm to a tourist - particularly a tourist from the US (doing so could be punishable by death).

Overall, this has been a great experience and we will return with our children (once they are older and more accomplished swimmers). Even so, this resort is considered a family resort (as evidenced by numerous families - mostly from Central America - we noticed during our vacation). This hotel is large enough to offer some great amenities, but small enough to avoid crowds at the infinity pool, dining by areas, and the beach.

Dear Mrs. Beckie,

Greetings from the Grand Roatan Caribbean Resort.

We are so very pleased to know that you had such an a relaxing and enjoyable vacation while lodging with us. Thank you for such a positive review; we are also so happy to know that our has met our hospitality goals.

Also, we would like to apologize for any inconveniences you may have encountered during your stay. We will look into each of them and make sure this does not happen again. Our priority is to make sure our guest are safe and happy. Your relaxing time is very important to us and we go above and beyond to treat you like royalty.

Also, please note that Tourism is our main income on the islands, it is well respected and we rarely have any issues. The death punishment might just be a hyperbole, since the Honduran law does not allow the death row punishment. We have never encountered or heard of a case like this; we do take security measures very seriously to protect all of our guest.
Again we appreciate you taking the time to review your stay with us and hoe you return someday. Phase two of our project might just be up and going when you return.

Best Regards,

Carlos Lopez

We were here for a week and greatly enjoyed our stay at the Grand Roatan. We were in a 3 bedroom condo up the hill from the pool area. The condo was spacious and had plenty of room for our group of 5. The staff was very friendly and always helpful.

High points of the resort: there was plenty of seating around the pool and on the beach, never problems finding a good seat whenever you arrived. Also, walking along the beach it was interesting to see the difference between the beach area at Grand Roatan and the beach area at close by resorts. While other resorts were crowded with rows and rows of chairs very close together, Grand Roatan’s set up was much more spacious. The snorkeling in front of the resort was really nice, especially the further out you went. We also thought it was great that the resort would take you in a golf cart to surrounding restaurants at no charge, although we made sure to tip. They also arranged transport to West End restaurants at a reasonable charge.

The beach area does get a lot more crowded when cruise ships are in with vendors and visitors, but we found it didn’t effect us much because unlike other nearby resorts, they did not sell day passes to cruise visitors. We just enjoyed our beach chairs and people watched or went to the pool. We did enjoy walking down the beach and eating at other resorts or taking the water taxi to West End.

My only nitpick with the resort was that I wished they had arranged our transportation to the airport an hour earlier. If you are leaving on a Saturday, I think you should leave the resort 3 hours ahead of time. We barely made it on our flight and only did so because they held the plane for us. It was a very stressful ending to our very relaxing week. But overall this was a great resort and served as a convenient and nice home base as we explored Roatan. We would definitely return here and recommend it to friends or family that travel to Roatan.

Dear Guest,

Greetings from the Grand Roatan Caribbean Resort.
We are so very pleased to know that you had the most adventurous and relaxing vacation while lodging with us. We also appreciate you taking the time to review your stay with us.

We would like to extend our sincerest apologies for the transportation, we will make sure and address this at once. We do know that the airport is a bit crowded on the weekends, but usually two hours is perfect. We will look into this at once and make sure it does not happen again. Overall, we are happy that this did not affect your experience with us.

Hope you return someday soon.

Best Regards,

Carlos Lopez
