Quiet, picturesque, friendly staff and fantastic cook. Celebrated a birthday here and walked the livados near by. Gardens lovely and best meal on island, very welcoming staff. Just sorry could not stay an extra night. Would return without question and time for June to see more agapanthus.

Urgently needed a holiday so booked a trip to Madeira because of the weather in November. We found this little gem in various forums and literature and were not disappointed. It is only an hour away from the airport, hidden in the mountains (adventurous trip!) overlooking the sea. We stayed in one of the garden rooms with a spacious room featuring a four poster bed, a bath tub and a large veranda with sun chairs. Aaah how quiet, how lovely, how good the service and friendliness of the staff, what a treat! Highly recommend!

We spent 12 days at the Atrio, the Hotel was perfect !
Situated quite high up a hillside overlooking Estreito da Calheta,.There is a mixture of rooms, As it was a special occasion we requested one of the Semi detached apartments complete with four poster bed.
The owners have thought of everything, the rooms are excellent, well equipped with Fridge, Safe, TV and nicely decorated. Cups with wide selection of teas ,glasses and bottle opener. They are cleaned daily. The Bed is comfortable and bedding is changed regularly.
The room has a separate toilet and luxurious Bathroom with twin sinks, walk in shower (hot water on demand) and huge sumptuous bath ( full size window so you can relax and see the sea or pull the blind down)
Outside you have a small grass garden area complete with two sun loungers ,small table (complete with candle ) and two chairs.
The views are amazing over the town and the sea,the gardens have been landscaped with a wide variety of flowers.
The hotel has a small pool, which was warm and ideal for a swim or a dip to cool off.
The Atrio has a self serve breakfast with a wide variety of breads ,cheeses, hams, fresh fruits, home made yoghurt, freshly squeezed orange juice and eggs and bacon cooked on request.
Evening meals ,they have a range of local dishes and serve an a la carte menu three times a week.
The hotel has a number of walking guides, sticks and torches available to borrow.A levada walk is 500 metres up the steep hill from the hotel, once at the top the walk stays level.
In summary the hotel well deserves its 5 star rating,we could not fault anything, loved our stay and will return as we feel we only scratched the surface of the beautiful island.

Great hotel with a great service. Rooms are nice and spacious. Breakfast is excellent, lots of fresh fruit and excellent pastries. Great laundry service as well. Located 8 kilometers from Calheta and 30km from Funchal, so a rental car is required.

They have different types of rooms – small quaint old ones and spacious modern ones with great views. So take care where they put you up.
When we were there the hotel-area was mostly cloudy while down by the sea the sun was shining. That comes with the location halfway up the mountains. Because of the remote location it´s convenient to have dinner at the hotel. Several times a week they offer special local dishes which you have to order by noontime. We liked these best. At the breakfast-buffet we especially liked their homemade rolls and croissants. They were delicious.
The staff at the restaurant and housekeeping was very very friendly.
