“Warmest welcome and comfortable house”
Reviewed 24 April 2016 for a stay in April 2016

The Stables is the perfect base from which to explore the island. It is spacious, comfortable and well appointed. In fact, it feels like a home from home. Maria is very friendly and made us feel like members of her extended family. The terrace is delightful with a lovely view and just the place to relax and unwind. A van comes by every morning with fresh bread and cakes (we recommend the custard tarts, "pastel de nata").
There are some good restaurants nearby in Prazeres (Restaurante Chico was our favourite with a welcoming staff, delicious food and an amazing passion fruit mousse) as well as in Jardim do Mar. We enjoyed walking along the Levada do Norte in Encumeada. The scenery is breathtaking! The coastal path from Paul do Mar to Prazeres is also worth the effort as is the Caminho do Calhau from Boaventura to Arco do Sao Jorge. The caves in Sao Vicente and the Volcanism Centre are very interesting. We hope to go back one day!

“Beautiful place in a vineyard”

We stayed at The Stable for a short week in September 2014. The Stable is a lovely clean house with a nice small porch with a view on the garden and atlantic ocean. The owner Maria is a very sweet woman who gave us delicious fruit and veg from her garden and banana plantation. Her english is good. Although the owners live in the house next door, you have a lot of privacy.
We loved her bananas! Especially since we back in Holland and have to eat the pale oversized 'factory' produced bananas. Since the grapes were fully ripe we could eat them almost unlimitedly from the adjacient vineyard. Paradise!
The house itself has a fully equipped kitchen, a nice bathroom, washing machine and small living room downstairs, and 2 beautiful bedrooms upstairs. It is perfect house for couples and small families.
It takes a 5-10min drive to Calheta where you find restaurants and a supermarket. There are also 2 nearby minimarkets (walking distance, but steep roads!) that sell some basics. Don't forget to drink a poncha on the terrasse at sunset at the minimarket/bar located downhill.

“Once you've got there, you don't want to go home!”

Believe me, you don't want to leave this house!
We've just returned from a super holiday in The Stable. The house is ideal for a family and can also work for two couples who know each other very well .Privacy is slightly limited. Extra matresses are available and there is plenty of cupboard space in the one bedroom and drawers in the other.
The house stands at the edge of Caminho Girau de Ca, on a small property owned by an elderly, very hard working, couple who , if asked, can't do enough for you. Maria was very helpful, raiding her kitchen for bits and pieces that we needed. Here in August, the weather has been incredible, the beach and water temp. at Calheta Beach, very inviting, al fresco eating at the house peaceful, either upstairs with the view, or downstairs in the shade of the vines. You wake up to the sound of running water, just like a chuckling brook. This is the irrigation channel right outside the house, that is opened for water at 7.a.m. A lovely sound.
You hear no other sounds than cicades, the rustling of tiny lizards in the vines, and the occasional neighbour greeting each other. There has been some annoyance from dogs barking at night, but this is being taken care of. Just like the other guests at The Stable, we have been met with friendliness and warmth. A car is very necessary if you want to get around, there are 32 tunnels to drive through between the airport and the house!!!! If anyone reading this would like to see extra photos, then I can be contacted through Gjertrud..
The island is so incredibly beautiful, that it is breathtaking, either you come for a long stay or keep coming back! Best wishes from Leslie & Leif Rydén.
