I went to Tuscookany for my 60 th birthday with three of the best home cooks( and friends) that I know. I was a bit worried that the classes would not be challenging enough, or that we would not be learning enough. Well! Our chef Paola Baccetti made sure that she worked us as hard as we wanted. From the get-go, she quickly evaluated that our whole group was up for serious cooking! In fact every one of the 8 participants were excellent cooks, and we all agreed that this was an awesome experience.
Chef Paola will work you as little or as much as you like, and will even repair your little mistakes so that when you have it for dinner, it will look and taste amazing!
Casa Ombuto is a wonderful small resort with eight private ensuites, combined with some common areas. It has beautiful simple, rustic but very comfortable rooms, in the middle of a wonderful quiet setting. The small village of Poppi is within walking distance ad distance and well worth the visit. The walk back uphill provides an opportunity to work off all the food we ate the previous night!
The 2 hiking tours we went on had a super nice guide and the walks were beautiful!
A perfect week which made my birthday unforgettable...

Room tip: All rooms are beautiful and have their own charm. There are ground floor accomodations

Dear Louise, I am so pleased to read that even though you were all very good cooks that you found the course challenging enough. Leave it to Paola to challenge you! Thank you for taking the time to write this great review and pleased to read you had such a great 60th birthday!

Casa Ombuto was an experience of a lifetime.

I traveled solo with my sister and her husband. I had my own luxurious room and bathroom. We shared a common room with a wood burning fireplace.

Every detail was thought out thoroughly. There was even a bottle of Prosecco in our fridge chilled and waiting for me!

Claudia was the most attentive host. She was a pleasure from the first greeting and site tour to the final departure hug.

The hiking was fantastic. The guide they arranged was extremely knowledgeable and loved nature. Note that walking sticks and hiking shoes are available if required.

The cooking classes were an experience!!! Paola is an excellent teacher and entertainer. Be prepared to learn lots and laugh hard.

The food was superb. Five course meals paired with red and white wine. The after dinner liquors were another detail not overlooked. Limoncello was my favourite.

As my week unfolded at Casa Ombuto, I was texting a friend and sending pictures outlining the experience. My friend has booked next year (May 2020) already!!!!

Our trip to Casa Ombuto was amazing. We arrived to a beautiful villa outside of Poppi Italy. Claudia greeted us making us feel like we were at our new home. Each room has its own ensuite and adjoining common area with fireplace, kitchen and sofa over looking the Tuscany hill. The villa had a hot tub, sauna, swimming pool, exercise area and walking trails. The main kitchen and dinning room where we had our classes was beautiful. We cooked 4 days with our skilled, energetic and entertaining instructor Paola Baccetti. We created decadent 5 course meals. In the evenings we relaxed as we enjoyed our creations. Two mornings we hiked in the national park around medieval sanctuaries. There was a one day group excursion to visit local farms which produced olive oil, wine and cheese (delicious & very interesting). Couldn't ask for a better hoilday hands on cooking, hiking in history and the wonderful hosts at Casa Ombuto

Have you ever had a dream to learn to cook gourmet Italian meals from scratch, start to finish, but feared that would be out of your league? Not so at Tuscookany’s Casa Ombuto! Before my husband and I spent our fabulous week there, I never would have imagined that my hands would be the ones to create such interesting and heavenly dishes such as Baccala Fritters with Leeks and Pumpkin Cream, or Pasta Buds stuffed with Baked Ricotta & Almond Butter Sauce!
We were in a class of eight, who quickly became fast friends. Chef Paola Bacetti took us under her wing, and made her kitchen our home. Paola is a force to be reckoned with. She is remarkably talented, deeply knowledgeable, extensively experienced, and with her zany and irreverent sense of humor is wildly entertaining. Her kitchen was always buzzing with energy as she shared her love for fresh authentic Tuscan cuisine. Paola kept us engaged, busy, and active as she showed us how to work with various foods and ingredients, and demonstrated new cooking techniques and processes. She was not shy about pushing us beyond our comfort zones, and our culinary results were outstanding. When we all sat down to enjoy our meals together, we couldn’t help but give a hearty round of applause for each course and the “chef” who made it. Frankie, Elizabeth, Pam, Chris, Peter, Linda, and Tom – you all rocked!!
Our terrific week at Casa Ombuto was not just about cooking. On two mornings we were taken on two very different scenic hikes through the nearby mountains and valley, led by our professional guide Matteo. He was friendly and fun, as well as informative and passionate about the environment. He even struck up a conversation with a local resident, who in turn invited our group into his home to see the breathtaking views from his back patio!
Another highlight was an all day tour, including a sheep farm with its pecorino production, and olive farm where we tasted the peppery oils, and our favorite - a fantastic private wine tasting at La Ripa Winery with the owner, Dr. Luzzi. He spent a lot of time with us, entertaining us with fascinating and funny family stories, and having us taste several of his exceptional wines. We liked them so much that we shipped a case of it home!!
Finally, the staff at Casa Ombuto was marvelous, and felt like old friends. Claudia and Alex were always available, and took care of so many details behind the scenes that we never wanted for a thing. While this may be the longest review on TripAdvisor ever, I have barely scratched the surface; you simply must experience it to understand. So, if you have any doubts about trying this out, don’t hesitate, you will love it, just as we did!

We pulled in to Casa Ombuto and Claudia, Alex & Alana were there to greet us and take our bags to our beautiful room. From that point on we were waited on hand and foot. The grounds were spectacular. Hiking trips very fun and beautiful sights. The excursion day was so fun going to the coop farm seeing the sheep and the lovely meal along with the cheese plant. The 1000 year old castle and winery was spectacular. Can't wait for our wine to get here. Cooking with Paola was the highlight of the trip and my husband and I learned so much. She is the BEST!!! not only a super chef but we have made a life long friend in her.. Also made friends with the others at the class. Paola, THANK YOU!!! MUH and HUGS. You won't go wrong if you book this cooking school.
