Absolutely great

Great place to go for a relaxing stay and some great game drives. The rooms are very well equipped and nicely located in the woods. The food is super. For the game drives the ranger and the tracker show to be experienced and able to build up the tension and to find the animals. Great opportunities to take pictures from very close by.
And above all extremely friendly all over.

Room Tip: All rooms are great but two rooms even have an outside bath

At the moment we stepped into Amakhosi Lodge we were met with a calm, friendly atmosphere. After a long drive we where offered to attend the evening safari, we jumped into the truck and then the adventure started! I could write a small book about Amakhosi in order to give it the deserved descriptions, but I’ll try keeping it short.

1. Atmosphere/Rooms/Facilities
Its not many rooms here, so the sence of being in center and privelieged is because you truly ARE in center and the staff is giving a personal, warm, sweet and professional treatment to all guests. The rooms contains big, nice, comfortable beds. Aircon, fans, fridge, everything that makes you comfortable. We stayed in one of two honeymoon suites- we where really shelted from the rest of the Lodge. Here you can walk around nude only been looked funny at, by an elephant or 20. The suites are equiped with a private pool that overlook the river. I love the new sweets provided in your room everyday! The Spa is magic, really good after hours and hours in the truck.

2. Safari
We did see the big 5 in Amakhosi!!! Even the Leopard! I do understand why it is called the Ghost of the bush- it sat in the grass, looked at us and then gently gave us the back an walked away. We saw it for about maks one minute, I held my breath- it is so beatyfull! Our gameranger and tracker was the best! We immidiately found our sence of humour and we love the way we could joke about all the strange animal behavoirs out in the wild. Pierre and Zakhele did their best to make us fell safe, they stayed calm and we never felt scared or frighten. We met the hurd of elephant several times, and for each time we could spot some personality of some of the elephants. One sweet story was about one of the baby-elephant that decided to chase the truck when we where on our way to leave. The elephant saw its uppertunity too do some show off for the other bigger ones- so he was running after us and horned his little trunk. It was a really cool moment. I could continue with alot! By foot we got the Cheetas attention, they stayed out of our zone, we stayed out theirs, but still pretty wild. We met the 2 male-lions, and fell asleep in our Lodge with them rawing in the bush. Another highlight was BBC in the bush, making dinner together with Pierre and Zakhele after dark, listening to the lions and all the night-life. The only part giving light was a bonfire and some candles. The driving back to the Lodge after good conversations and alot of laughing, we looked at the sky and the stars- and agreed, we cant be any closer to heaven on earth.
Pierre and Zakhele had worked together for almost 4years, its easy to see they enjoy eachothers company- it is a whole lot of trust between those two, and that made us feel safe.
Thanks for all the knowledge, from big elephants and girafs to small frogs and their nesting habbits. All the birdsounds, the butterflies and termites. The grumpy, old bison’s, and the mating rituals of some of animals that is just hilarious put into a human context.

3. Food
All the food in Amakhosi is home-made with the best quality! The selections, the freshness, the creativity, the tastes and spices- I’m stunned. We constantly compared ourself with the full, sleepy lions we observed after taken down a bison. We where about unable to breath.

4. Staff
Beside the contact we had with Pierre and Zakhele. The whole staff in Amakhosi is one big smiling group. Zihnle had total control on everything, she knows it all. We where lucky to be entertained by the female staff, they sang, played the drum and danced. It was a really strong moment! Being out in the wild with the sounds, smells and heat- with the powerfull beat of the drum and the clear voices from the ladies. It melted my heart completely!

I havent been in any other Game-Lodges, but talked with alot of people during our 13day travel in Africa, and I have the impression that this is really one of the best. I cant see what others can provide that is missing in Amakhosi, so we will come back. Not bothering checking out any other.

(On the picture of the waterpond, you can spot three wildlife animals- the crocodile in the water, the buffalo in the back and the cheetas in between them. The picture is taken under a «downer», a drink out of the car- so, yes, beeing SO close with the wildlife)

We stayed at Amakhosi for two nights in January. When we arrived we were welcomed, fed and watered and shown to our rooms before setting off on an afternoon game drive. We saw cheetahs, rhinos, buffalo and lions before stopping for sundowners. Later we had a lovely meal back at the lodge. We did two more early morning game drives and another evening one andf ended up seeing a leopard as well as getting up close and personal with a small herd of elephants.
In addition to the drives warthogs, monkeys, kudu and impala wandered freely around the well tended grounds.
Our accommodation was first class and we saw all of the animals we hoped to see and more besides. It was the highlight of our fortnights tour of KZN

We had an incredibly stay at the Amakhosi Safari Lodge for 3 nights - November 21st-24th. From the moment that you arrive until the very last minute you leave, the staff make you feel so welcomed, with attention to detail from the rooms, meals, spa, and finally to the game drives. Our ranger Jacques and tracker King were absolutely wonderful. King’s keen sense of tracking to find us all the big 5, took a great deal of skill; Jacques knowledge and details to all the wildlife at Amakhosi, from insects, amphibians, flora, birds, to the incredible animals, was the highlight of our trip! It was truly a privilege to be on safari with them. Finally, I want to also mention Lindo, at the front desk, who made our stay so enjoyable and relaxed. Amakhosi is truly a magical place, especially for us two Canadians!

We revisited this wonderful lodge again, but now we stayed in the private house with the family. This is an amazing experience with all the luxury. The living room is a wonderful place to relax. From the veranda you have a nice and private view on the Mkuze River and the wild live. A Kingfisher was just below fishing.
The 'mini'-bar is well-stocked. The two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms are very nice, and it is a pity you have to close down your eyes to go to sleep, because you want to enjoy this place as long as possible.

We also enjoyed the game drives with Jeremy and Aiden. It was again a treat to see the lions, leopard, cheetahs, rhinos, elephants and buffels but also the kudus, nyalas, zebras, girafs, antilopes, porcupines and aardvarks, the beautiful birds and all the smaller creatures, well explained by our tracker and ranger. And although it rained sometimes, we certainly enjoyed it very much.

The food of the lodge was also good, comparable to very good restaurants. But the main reason to come was for the game.

Room tip: The private house is excellent for a family of four

Amakhosi is a really great place to stay. The entrance gate is about 16km from the lodge itself (down a gravel road). So once the ever so helpful attendant at the gate has let you in you get a bit of a game drive before you get there.

Once there the lodge is immaculate. Well presented, very well designed and maintained. The main lodge and all the rooms have wonderful views over the river.

Our room (Room 1) was lovely. Very spacious and a very good outdoor area complete with a hammock. We also had a couple of Warthogs that liked to graze on our bit of lawn and sleep behind the room! There was also a Nyala that also seemed to hang around. All making staying very interesting.

Food at the lodge is first class. If you have any special requirements they go out of their way to make sure you are well catered for. Service is excellent.

The game drives were first class Our guide was very knowledgable and we managed to see four of the 'big five', The Leopard being a bit shy. Although this is a private lodge with fences, the area covered is absolutely huge. You definitely don't get the captive animals, zoo feeling when you are there.

I mentioned the 'game drive' approach to the lodge via the 16km track. Well when we were making our way to the exit gate we were stopped by a five Rhino 'traffic jam'. They took ages to move off the road! It was wonderful sitting in out hire car watching them. Fifty metres down the road there was a further three just off the road! What a bonus!

Highly recommended.

Wow what a wonderful and concise review and we really appreciate that you took the time to post it. Many of our guests make their decision off TripAdvisor and that is because of reviews like yours. We are so pleased that you had a wonderful stay with us and have left with some great memories and certainly your farewell committee of rhino traffic jam - we have been late many a times with either elephant or giraffe jams and not so much rhino you were indeed very fortunate - as you mentioned we are private but our animals do roam free and many a time they can hide out in the hills for days, but in saying that they do not have many outside threats and are comfortable with our vehicles . We hope that you visit us again and the team send fond regards
