What can I say about the Bambu Casita...
Well we were quite unsure of what to expect and being our very first trip to Costa Rica we were not sure whether we wanted to book a rental on the ocean or in the hills. Our conversations with Kim the owner were very quick and attentive, and there was something comforting in spending some time on an organic coffee farm versus the fast loud pace of a beachfront somewhere living like a typical tourist.
We landed a day late in Costa Rica after a rough couple of flights and we utilized our directions provided to get to the location from the Airport which is about a half hour if you know where you're going. The roads in Costa Rica are basically a spaghetti road to spaghetti road however you get your bearings and your journey is easier each time.
We met with the grounds keeper Jose whom lives nearby and he guided us to our retreat. Jose is AWESOME, and loves to talk and share stories and help whenever possible. The road to this tranquil paradise is a bumpy one! Our real only concern actually, because aside from the rough road to access the property everything else was outstanding. The property was so clean, with a wonderful hillside view and beautiful landscaping throughout. The Bamboo house was much nicer than the pictures illustrated and the bed was extremely comfortable. Humming birds in the mornings and early evenings kept us company, and it was very nice and quiet, no sounds of vehicles and loud hooligans all over the place. The bathroom was very nice and the shower was awesome, with high windows all around to see the mountain and hillside while enjoying a hot shower. There is even a fire pit and chairs to sit out under the stars and enjoy.
The kitchen was well appointed with a 4 burner gas range, and oven. We made many meals and had everything we needed. Its about 15 minutes to a market for groceries, and about 5 minutes to a corner store should you need anything urgent. We found ourselves making sure we had what we needed before returning as our small compact car was not ideal for the access road and we avoided unnecessary travel in and out.
As for attractions around this location, the Volcan de Poas is about a 20 minute drive up the mountain from this and its worth the drive, however go in the morning as it clouds over almost every afternoon. ( $10/per person + $3 parking) Even the view while driving up is worth it. You are about 20-25 minutes outside of Alajuela and there is lots to do there as far as shopping and bars etc etc. We did not spend much time there however as we made day trips to Jaco and other places near and around the coast.
Over all, our stay was very nice and we would return without question. Weather was superb, however we would recommend bringing a light sweater and pants, as it can get chilly and windy in the evenings and early mornings. Its on the side of the volcano and much higher elevation than the San Jose Valley so that is to be expected. It was perfect for a couple. We were sad to leave and truly look forward to revisiting soon.
