Located about 90 minutes north of Madrid, 5 miles (9 Kilometers) south of Olmedo, Spain on highway N-601 lie the remains of a Roman Villa of enourmous proportions. The home covers an area of nearly three/fourths of an acre, 30,000 square feet, 2700 square meters. The construction began in the 3rd century A.D., with additions continuing until it was abandonned some time in the 5th century A.D., with the fall of the Roman empire in Spain. The site was discovered in the early 1940's and conservation has been ongoing since that time, with the current museum opening in 2003.
The site now contains not only the well preserved ruins, but an extensive museum, a re-creation of a smaller Roman Villa and a childrens play area. On Sunday's there is an interactive, live recreation of Roman life in the Villa Recreation, designed to allow children to better understand how life was lived in the Roman times, through entertainment.
For those who enjoy history, archaelogy, or museums this is a must see facility. Having been well considered, there are audio guides available in English, French and of course Spanish. For the children, they will enjoy the enourmity of the home as welll as the wonderfully preserved mosaic tile floors. There are ample displays of all types and for all education levels and ages. For those children who may not find archaeology, the recreated, though smaller, Roman villa with furnishing and decor to simulate the time period, will be interesting.
Further, should the kids just need a place to play, while one of the parents browses the display and museum, there is a large playground provide, specifically for that purpose. There is ample areato play and many different types of equipment for them to enjoy.
The traveller will find the museum staff helpful and knowledgeable concerning not only the museum, but also the surrounding area. I found this site to be amazing and would certainly recommend it to all who are traveling through Spain.
Should you find the time to extend your stay in the area, there is a wonderful hotel in Olmedo. The Hotel Balneario Villa Olmedo, is a fine place to spend time with many facilities available for the traveler, be they a single traveler, a couple, or with family. Olmedo itself is an interesting place which I have also reviewed.
