From the moment we arrived and were greeted with fresh coconuts and cold, scented towels, we were totally wowed. Morgan's Rock is a beautifully designed ecolodge situated in a magnificent, pristeen setting -- a mile-long, crescent-shaped beach surrounded by cliffs and verdant jungle forest. The individual bungalows are jaw-dropping, with two separate levels as well as an outdoor deck. Panoramic views and tons of space, and I have never before had an in-room coffee grinder and fresh coffee beans! The setting is remote (that's the point); but there is plenty to do, and getting to and from locations outside of the property is doable. Every single thing -- food, staff, rooms, pool, beach, trails, horseback riding -- was perfection itself. The staff members were, without exception, delightful, helpful and great people.

Room tip: pretty sure you can't go wrong, be prepared for lots of stairs

We just returned from our third stay at Morgan’s Rock. We were there in 2017 and 2018, but missed 2019. I think I reviewed this ecolodge once before, and I still think of it as one of my favorite places in the world. And here’s why: the superb setting is on a cliff above a beautiful bay on the Pacific Ocean with gorgeous sunsets; the private bungalows are very comfortable with two levels, an outdoor deck, a screened inside that is open to the breeze and sounds of the breaking waves; the king-size bed has a deliciously comfortable mattress and an air-cooled awning to deliver AC just to the bed, if you choose, so you feel like you’re living with Nature but also get a good night’s sleep; the palm-tree and tamarind-tree-lined beach is very private and has cabanas to stay out of the sun; the ocean is the perfect cooling temperature and the waves fun to play in; there is great birding right from your bungalow, from kayak in the estuary, or hiking in the forest; the staff are excellent and service impeccable; there are international travelers staying here who are interesting to talk to but if you wish to be alone that is no problem; the food is excellent; massages offered in the beach-side spa are superb, and while you are relaxing with your treatment you are serenaded with the wind in the coconut palms and the ocean waves; the overall tone of this place is serene and lo-key.
We elected to spend most of our time at the beach, reading in the hammocks and playing in the waves for a week of respite and communing with Nature. However, there are lots of fun activities to do here, which we did during our first visit. Staff naturalists can take you on adventures to look for monkeys and other wildlife or horseback riding on the beach. The families who had children with them were having a great time!
It is a shame that the political situation in Nicaragua has dampened tourism to the country, especially to Morgan’s Rock, which is on a 4,000-acre nature preserve in the southwest corner of the country, far from any political demonstrations, which occur mostly in the cities. We felt safe traveling here with transportation arranged by Morgan’s Rock. We were picked up in Liberia, Costa Rica, and transported across the border. (We were picked up in 2018 at Managua, which I think is fine if you have a driver.)
Our three stays were all in January or February, which offered a sunshine break from winter’s gloom in the U.S.. We are thinking, however, of making our next visit during the rainy season. I’ve been to Costa Rica in August and it is a beautiful time to be in this part of the world – it is cooler, the blue sky is filled with big cumulus clouds that deliver thunderstorms for a few hours during the afternoon, and the tropical deciduous forest is lush and green.
I could go into much more detail about how wonderful the management and staff are at Morgan’s Rock, but this is getting long already.

This secluded luxury eco resort is truly something special. It's a bit challenging to get there over extensive bumpy roads but definitely worth it. There is attention to detail with comfort items for guests while at the same time respecting their environmental commitment.
The gourmet menu changes daily with offerings from their farm. Harvey and Janley and the rest of the staff are fantastic and made us feel very welcome. We can't wait to go back!

This is how we were greeted upon our arrival, and it couldn't have been more appropriate. We quickly felt like we belonged at Morgan's Rock and were cared for in such a sweet way. The room was gorgeous (we were in an Ocean View with plunge pool) and the facilities all gorgeous.

We went horseback riding twice and my 13 year old daughter had her first experience cantoring and galluping on the beach. It was absolutely dreamy.

The kids boogie boarded in the soft, warm waves much of the day and then played in the big pool or our plunge pool the rest of the time.

I personally thought the food menu was a little too fancy/american/expensive. We asked for local meals for dinner which they easily accommodated, was absolutely yummy, and a much better value.

Morgan's Rock is an absolute gem. I recommend you get there as quickly as possible. And say hi to Harvey, Jonathan, Andrea, Maria Jose, Bismark, Gabriela, Ivar and the rest of the team!

Room tip: Some rooms are quite a hike to get to, so if this is an issue for you, let them know.

My husband and I stayed here for three nights in November. We felt like we were so lucky because all of the surroundings were so lush and green and the weather was not too hot, even breezy most days. Upon our arrival, we were greeted with fresh coconuts and a tour of the property. It was their low season and our room was upgraded to a bungalow with a plunge pool (#13). Although we truly did enjoy our room during our stay, we would have rather been in a bungalow directly above the ocean with no pool. This unfortunately was not an option for us. Nonetheless, our days were filled with mornings on the kayak through the estuary, reading books lazily under the ranchos on the private beach, and boogie boarding into the sunset. We truly savored every minute that we had at Morgan’s Rock. It is such a special place and you feel it the moment you step foot on the property. We hope to see tourism pick up again in Nicaragua. We felt completely safe during our eight days in the country, especially during our stay at Morgan’s Rock. Thank you for such a wonderful experience! We hope to be back in the future.
