Owner description: Summer (June, July, August) Summer is now here to stay in the Cairngorms so why not take a visit to see Britain’s only free-ranging herd of reindeer in their natural habitat? Summer is the time for shedding the thick winter coat, grazing to put on weight for the reindeer as well as growing new antlers for the year. Visits go every day at 11am and 2.30pm (additional 3.30pm weekdays in July & August) at this time of year, follow a reindeer herder as you make your way up to the mountain enclosure, walk amongst reindeer, stroking and feeding them as the herder tells you all about them. Situated in the centre of the Cairngorms National Park, you will also enjoy beautiful views of the Cairngorm Mountains. The walk takes 20 minutes and will cross some rough and muddy ground on the mountainside so make sure you’ve got some sturdy footwear and nice cosy layers! For those less able, you can visit a small group of reindeer in the paddocks and exhibition at the Centre, quizzes crafts for kids.

Hike up t o visit the reindeer in their lower pastures. They are fascinating and very friendly (especially if you have food). An interesting animal to learn about, once native to the area. These are the reindeer who visit schools and holiday parks at Christmas time. In June we got to see some of the babies which were a couple of months old and still nursing.

Well organized hill walk to see reindeer. The two leaders who guided the walk were knowledgeable and friendly. Some of the visitors were a bit pushy and wanted to be first to see the reindeer and get their photos. Tip: wait until they are done (because then they want to be the first to leave) and hang out awhile. We were the last to leave, and the guide took a walk to find the mama reindeer so he could offer supplemental bottles of milk to the twins.

We enjoyed the Hill Walk very much. The children there also seemed to love it once they got up there.

Seeing and interacting with the free-range reindeer herd was an amazing experience. The reindeer were gentle and highly amusing to observe, each with their own distinct personality. Our guides were obviously experienced and cared deeply about the well-being of the animals, and also were approachable and willing to answer questions. We were lucky enough to see the baby twin reindeer, although we had to restrain ourselves from petting them as the guides told us the babies were starting to get a bit too interested in humans. I would go back to see the herd in a heartbeat and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Cairngorm.
