Owner description: The Monastery of Proussos was named after the Icon of Panagia Prousiotissa from Prousa in Minor Asia, according to a legend painted by Luke the Evangelist. It is 31 km north of Karpenisi. It was build in the 9th century (some say 12th century). According to a legend the monastery was founded during the period of the Byzantine Emperor Theophilos (829-842) who was an iconoclast ( against the use of icons). To protect the icon it was decided by supporters of the use of icons to move it to a safe place. The two persons responsible to find a place for the icon who came in Proussos decided to stay here and to build a monastery, and they were the first monks who changed their names to Dionysios and Timotheos. According to legends they decided the place due to miracles that happened due to the icon and because they could not move the icon to another place.Part of the monastery was destroyed 1587 by a fire. During the Greek war of independence it was a refuge place of various heroes such as Giorgos Karaiskakis, Markos Botsaris or Lambros Katsonis. A large part of the monastery was destroyed , including many books and documents, by fire set by German troops in the second world war.

An interesting story lies behind the tremendous buildings of Prousos monastery. Talking with the locals you realise that there are numerous stories about the miracle picture of mother mary all with the same ending... saving a person's life. Even though i am not religious i recommend to visit the monastery to enjoy the great view from the tower with the clock. Prousos village is a place you should visit!!

Love this monastery. I get goosebumps listening to the services here and the history here definitely makes this monastery (and the drive to here from Karpenisi) amazing! I can spend all day here. I have yet to climb to the tower above because I was unsure as to how to get there. Guaranteed a good day after you visit here. I love it!

The route to Moni from Karpenisi is amazing and the final reward from your destination is unforgettable. For sure a place that you shouldn't miss if you visit the area. There are beautiful paths around the cluster that worth walking them at any time of the day and anytime of the year. I feel thankful that I managed to be here 4 times during a year period and enjoyed it in all seasons
