Near a petroleum deposit the highway begins is a rather shoddy neighborhood. What it has to do with Trans-Amazon highway is iffy, since the highway itself has many unfinished stretches. If you are interested in going to this mile-marker, go a few hundred feet further and visit the Fort, which is worthwhile. Then this location becomes a byproduct of a more valuable experience.

The beginning of the Trans-Amazonian Highway (BR-230) is located right next to the Port of Cabedelo, not far from the ruins of Fort Santa Catarina and also near the ferryboat that crosses to the town of Lucena, so if you like this sort of geographic interest and you're nearby, you should come and take a photo.

Few know it, but one beginning of the Trans-Amazonian Highway starts in Cabedelo just north of Joao Pessoa, the capital of the state of Paraiba. There is nothing spectacular about the "site"--just a sign on the edge of the road--but for those who enjoy this type of thing, you can get out and take a photo, then if you're ambitious attempt to drive to Lábrea in the state of Amazonas 2500 miles away! (And later go in the opposite directions--from Oiapoque to Chui--and you'll "know" Brazil!)
